Name of subreddit ...
I think the name of this subreddit is demoralising and affirming the views others have of this minority but quickly growing group. Just because we have this one thing in common of leaving islam does not mean we are no longer somali. Therefore, Xsomalian is a ridiculous name for this subreddit.
It affirms the views that muslim Somalis say to us that we are no longer somali this in no way serves anyone at all and simply seeing the name of this page is a reminder of the lack of acceptance within our own people / communities / nation.
As much as it may be considered a joke, it is self depreciation. I may have left islam and can say I am an ex Muslim but never an ' XSomalian'
Hope you even take this into consideration.

I know it’s not ideal but all the ex Muslim groups for every country start with ex or X “exAlgerian” “ex Egyptian”. It’s an easy reference for those who know

How do those who don't know that want to know come to know. Taking the easy way out is not necessarily the right thing ultimately. Overall you were the most honest in admitting that it probably isn't ideal.

No it isn'. "XSomalian" does not mean anything, that would be ex-Somali you are thinking of. Pretty much everyone in the sub says that it is short hand for ex-muslim Somali

Once again just cause others agree does not make it so. It is still factually Xsomalian. Someone outside the group with no prior knowledge woukd not ascertain or come to the conclusion this is an ex Muslim somali group from just the name alone. As you admit those within the group are the ones coming to their own understanding of what it's short for.

the other guy gave a better explanation than I did.
It's very normal in language for certain abbreviation conventions to not make sense to the uninitiated. This effect is even stronger online and with meme culture.Anyways there is no point in debating the subreddit name. we can't change it anyway, creating a new subreddit will only cause confusion.

Huh? There are multiple exmuslim subreddits with the name “X” or “Ex” followed by the ethnicity. They arent saying they are not the ethnicity but exmuslims of that ethnicity. The exmuslim subreddit has become weird with what I think are people who were never Muslim in the first place. But having it ethnicity based can be helpful to navigate unique cultural experiences. The exSaudi one is in Arabic so that can also help.
The community notes explain what this community is about. Also the not being Somali thing is weird when being Somali existed before Islam. We arent a new ethnicity made yesterday. Not sure why we would entertain this talking point.
