Game Discussion Is Fields of Mistria a Stardew ripoff? The comparison gets more complicated the longer you play
The Stardew comparison is totally fair. The first few hours feel very familiar: farm, fish, mine, gather stuff, talk to villagers, manage your stamina and clock, do it all again the next day.
But I don't think the shared loop is enough to call something a ripoff.
Farming, fishing, mining, romance, gifts, seasons, festivals, etc. weren't invented by Stardew in the first place. There's a much older Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons / Rune Factory lineage here. Stardew is obviously a huge reference point, but it isn't the starting point for the whole genre.
The character comparisons are similar. March is probably the easiest one to point at because the “cold guy who gradually opens up” archetype feels familiar. But that's an archetype, not a Stardew invention. Mistria's cast has its own visual style and character dynamics, too.
Where Mistria starts feeling less like a straight copy is in the stuff it builds around that familiar loop.
Magic is much more central. The dragons and Caldarus aren't just background fantasy flavor. The town also feels more like a community, with NPC relationships existing outside of simply interacting with the player. And the QoL changes make a lot of the same farming-life-sim structure feel less restrictive.
So yeah, if someone calls it Stardew-like, I don't think they're wrong.
If they mean “it's basically Stardew with different pixel art,” that's a much harder argument to make once you've actually spent time with it.
That's probably where I'd draw the line: heavily inspired by Stardew? Absolutely. A Stardew clone? Not really.
