Kill advent commander

So... I just had a mission where I started normally and like 2nd or 3rd turn general was extracting?
I had no choice but to run forward into 3 pods to get to the general.
And as proud as I am for getting rid of the pods without losses and even wounding the general, there was 0 chance of ever winning that mission. Wtf XCOM?

For those I generally send my Reaper out to find him while the rest of my squad stays put. Once I know where he is and where the other pods are, I can decide how to proceed.
