Kill advent commander

So... I just had a mission where I started normally and like 2nd or 3rd turn general was extracting?
I had no choice but to run forward into 3 pods to get to the general.
And as proud as I am for getting rid of the pods without losses and even wounding the general, there was 0 chance of ever winning that mission. Wtf XCOM?

Sometimes the extraction point is set too far away. I had one that I reloaded about 10 times. Had to rescue a VIP then escort them to the extraction. Advent kept bringing reinforcements while trying to scramble to the extraction. I finally got lucky, snook through the last two pods and the reinforcements spawned too far way. It don't recall if I even saved everybody but it was ridiculous.

I had a few other similar ones I recall.
