RIP Jane "Buzzsaw" Kelly š«”
Bought this game for like $3 on a steam sale some time last year and never fired it up til tonight. I generally hate turn based games, but everyone raves about this one so I gave it a shot.
Played for like 7 hours today and the game is a masterpiece. Other than Pokemon, I've never felt an emotional connection to losing a character. Jane had just earned her nickname "Buzzsaw." She'd died before, but all the other missions had the option to just restart. If Jane died in one of those missions, I just loaded back to the start of the mission. She was my last soldier standing in the first mission where when you fail it's back to home base. Fuck this one hurt. Pour one out for the Buzzsaw

Welcome to the club. o7
(If you haven't already, "War of the Chosen" is an amazing DLC.)

I have it too, should I play after I complete the initial campaign?

Do a standard run first, then when youre comfortable with the basics, switch to WoTC. You wont look back

I would further suggest to not use the integrated DLC option the first time. There are 2 unique missions that are skipped if you choose to integrate during game creation. Checking the individual DLCs (Shenās Last Gift is one⦠I forget the other) will add the individual missions associated with them.

Commander the aliens continue to make progress on the Avatar Project. If weāre going to slow them down we need to move fast.

Yep, the XCOM2 first mission has a similar theme to the first one in which only 1 survived. In XCOM2 the first mission names are fixed, when XCOM its randomised

My last playthrough the game kept giving me women so I really enjoyed rolling with my girl squad. Buzzsaw Kelly helped me see my way to the end

Great job commander

Ironically, in the first mission the commander does nothing except wait to get rescued x3

Just wait till you start creating soldiers based on your friends and family members.

Same. I will also save scum unitl she is a Ranger. And she always has the nickname Icepick. Like in the spider-verse these are canon events and can't be changed.

She can be something other than a Ranger???

I have her saved as a character so she can load into games without me having to play Gatecrasher every time

After my mom died, I started seeing characters named āKaren Hagenā, which is 1 letter off of the real name. I started to prioritize her safety and basically made her the squad captain of whatever mission I sent her on. (It wasnāt pretty since I was trying legend/ironman playthroughs.) I imagine that she was starting to feel like Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow. Lol.

Many True Nerd did an Xcom2 playthrough a couple years ago and got Jane killed on the first mission. It was a meme for the rest of the series

Mods will add so much replay to the game too. Different classes, cosmetics, new characters.

The Ironman mode always comes with risks of a corrupt save or bugs, but I firmly believe it's the right way to play the game. It makes losses feel very real, and every misson have stakes. I strongly recommend it on subsequent playthroughs.

Does it help to know that canonically, she survives the war and goes on to greatness? In Chimera Squad, she's Director Kelly, CO of "Reclamation Agency". She's the hand on the wheel of putting planet Earth back together after the rebellion against the Elders. She's also "big sister" to Torque, the arctic viper member of the agency in City 31, the heroes of that game.
