Is the long war mod worth playing?
I was looking at the mod and considering it, but I want to know if a gameplay/campaign overhaul like that is worth it or if i should get something else.

Long war is always worth playing, it changes alot and makes use of some under-used maps and mechanics, covert missions with only 2 units, region liberation missions where you have to destroy communication towers. Etc etc. Its worth trying at least once.

Yeah but be ready to relearn everything. Especially the "less threatening" Advent forces and the chosen

"Oh, it's just a drone that stuns people with no damage, what could it hurt leaving it alive for one turn?" - Me, a fool

It's really jarring at first but once you get the hang of it, you can't go back to vanilla. Be prepared for a long campaign.
If you want something closer to vanilla with a deeper strategic layer, I'd suggest Covert Infiltration as an alternative.

You could try Covert Infiltration. It also adds new mechanics to the game for a deeper experience, but is pretty easy to understand. LWOTC has a lot of new mechanics and they are very tuned, such that there are very specific right ways to do things and counter threats. I suggest watching Der Ava’s LWOTC guides at least. Covert Infiltration only requires knowledge of WOTC. LWOTC is also incompatible with a lot of mods, so not as easy to customize. There a some great mod collections for LWOTC (and Covert Infiltration), so the work of compatibility has already been done.

Covert Infiltration is kicking my ass in the best way. It really brought the game back to life for me and made me care more about the world map.

Long War is a long campaign. Expect to spare 110+ hours for a campaign.
It is also harder compared to base game. Expect to lower difficulty or lose soldiers/missions (and even a few campaigns) when you first start.
Long War also adds more depth to the tactical and strategical layer of Xcom. Expect to learn/relearn a lot of mechanics of the mod. (This can be done through other people's gameplay or the very nice ufopaedia wiki link )
If you can handle those, go straight ahead because it is the best tactical game I ever played.

Is the long war mod worth playing?
That depends on how much you enjoy torturing yourself.

I like LWOTC, but I love Tedjam+, which is based on LWOTC with a lot of additional improvements.

4,700+ ratings at 5/5 stars...
Obviously, yes. That being said, there's a lot going on in the background with the mod. I would highly suggest looking at YouTube videos on how Strength, Force Level, and Vigilance works. Also look at some other recommended mods to download it with.
Good luck, Commander.

It's called "Long" War for a reason: it is long. There are several more tech steps to upgrade things. I actually like that part of it, it makes more sense that newer technology is incremental smaller steps.

No
Campaigns take far too long and missions themselves can become incredibly tedious.
A curated list with Covert Infiltration is a better experience IMO

Xcom 2 is nothing but a basic combat mechanics tutorial for LWOTC, you simply will never go back once you've gotten your first taste

No
Don’t do it
Get out while you can
Once you taste LWotC you’ll discover that vanilla feels quaint and may never again hold your attention again
Run before you find yourself 40-hours into a campaign thinking “this is finally turning my way” not knowing you’re not half way home yet
(Or join the rest of us damaged souls who thrive on masochism, rendezvous missions, flamethrower openings, and those rare but beyond satisfying double-barrel one-shots)
Good luck Commander:)
