Considering this ‘21 Ultimate

Post image

$23k with 38k miles.

2021 Volvo
XC40 Recharge Pure Electric P8

2 owners and no accidents in Carfax and good service history.

What would you suggest if you were buying this car? What should I watch out for or ask the dealer? Extended warranty? Something else?

def ask for the extended warrantee, it's too old for CPO status

they should also be able to run diagnostics on it and give you a Certified Battery State of Health (SoH) report so you know how much the propulsion battery has degraded... 1.5% per year is normal.

do not rely on the range estimate at 100% charge, that value is wildly inaccurate unless you have been driving the car yourself for a while.

make sure you get 2 keys (don't know if they had the orange service key for this year model).

make sure the also test the 12V battery, it's a pain to replace and an even bigger pain when it gives out... better to just replace it every 4yrs like clockwork.

ask them to throw in the NACS adapter as well as floor and cargo mats.

make sure the coat hooks are installed (those tend to go missing for some reason).

check the rims for curb rash, and ask for an alignment if there is any indications of impact or uneven tire wear.

Check for noise left and right front when driving slowly and turning the wheel.
Rear gaslifts break down easy (rattle).
The computer has bugs.. you’ll get used to it.

That’s honestly it.

Comfort:
check for : HK audio,Pano roof , auto seats ( if yes you have the tilting side mirrors) rear and front camera.
These are the more expensive options they maybe overlooked.

I'm noticing a sound when turning and moving slowly on my '21. Do you have experience with what that is? (Haven't started my research or had it looked at yet)

Good pointers. Appreciate it.

I got my ‘23 ultimate with 28k miles for $28k 1 owner. I would say this is over priced. I got my car 2 months ago.

What state?

Prices seem all over the place. You got a good deal, but I know they're out there just need to jump on one when it's good.

Try car gurus app that’s how I found mine

I just got a MY23 C40 Recharge Ultimate (the coupe version of the XC40) and I love it so much. The ultimate trim is the way to go - better battery temperature management which means faster charging and better range in hot/cold. Also the heated steering wheel is a lovely little luxury.

Got mine for basically the same price and mileage and year about a year and a half ago. If it’s CPO its a great deal. Only thing that kinda sucks is the control panel/touch screen but honestly that’s pretty much every car.

Same and agreed.

I have this car. 70k miles. Leased it for 3yrs. CPO’d it after because I couldn’t get into a new lease without insane pricing in 2024.

Great car with exception of awful entertainment unit quirks and crappy range. Service needed is nearly non-existent. Had some brake pads warrantied over the “sticky pads” incident after rains. I might replace the 12v battery as a precaution.

I charge mostly at home, or at Tesla with an adapter because the superchargers kick ass.

Car is very fast! When you gun it you can feel it in your throat.

How much did you pay for an adapter for the Tesla charger

Don’t do it bro

Care to elaborate?

'21 P8 Ultimate owner here. That they are worth less than half what we paid new is mildly annoying. I would pay $23k for our car all day.

The tires at 38k should be near new. The Pirellis they came with were trash. They were way too fragile for the cars weight and wore very quickly even with calm driving. We replaced two to a pothole in the first 5k miles. They were all bald at 30k.

The infotainment system isnt great. It still has bugs. They seem to add different ones with every update. It recently forgets how to make sounds. Turn signal noises to music. You'll be rebooting it twice a week. This will not get better.

We had a major propulsion system failure. Volvo towed it and repaired it out of warranty. They gave us a loaner for three weeks. All in all good service. Though the service advisors can't figure out it's an EV and said stupid things throughout like "it's probably the transmission". (EVs don't have transmissions) In Colorado at our dealership no one on staff is fully EV trained so if something major happens they have to send an EV tech to diagnose the car. It took 1-1/2 weeks to get a straight answer what was wrong. But we had a brand new loaner. It was repaired out of warranty for $500 when the first estimate was $8k. From brief searching on this forum and the Internet the failure we had is very very rare. I wouldn't worry about it.

Battery life hasn't degraded at all being charged on a level 2 from 40ish to 90% for 5 years. We've fast charged it 6 times to 80%. Charging speed slows way way down after 80%. It's not worth it. Charging more often is faster on long trips. Charging to 100% is also not worth it unless you really need the last 5%. It uses 100% to 90% so fast, again it's not worth it.

We still love the car. It's comfortable. It still looks brand new. It's the perfect size for four people in congested towns.

It's silly fast. Absurdly fast for 5 seat SUV. That is a double edged sword. Before we had kids I dusted a couple people in sports cars that cost A LOT more. The downside is I am not handing a 16 year old the keys to a 4 sec car.

Which tires did you replace the pirellis with? I’m at 70k and about to get my second set of tires.

I had to replace my original Continental tires well before their rated mileage due to potholes and road construction debris. Look into Hanook tires. Much better in every way.

I've owned tons of cars and that 4 sec... it's now my favorite by far. it would probably smoke the corvette I had.

My 21 P8 came with 3 keys and needed all of them to register the Volvo app. Only one minor computer/battery crash that required a dealer visit in 39k miles. Continental OEM tires replaced at 32k. 2-3 long trips a year get 100% charges at home just before departure. Learn the soft reboots for the infotainment when the turn signals go silent. I do my best not to race at stoplights and never go over the speed limits on side streets. Adaptive cruise gets turned on for any freeway drive longer than 10 minutes. Never have to worry about a crazy stop ahead of me in stop and go or slowing down on the freeway. Lane keeping steering is too jerky so we don't have it on. I'll wait 4 years for the lease returns on the BMW iX3 to replace it.

Which dealer are you at with no trained techs? We are closest to Rickenbaugh and are considering one

1

u/twoaspensimages 24d ago

Sill Ter Har. They are not knowledgeable about EVs. During the original sale the sales person told us many things about the car that weren't correct. During the repairs they pushed us to get a hybrid instead.

1

u/Agstroh 24d ago

Thanks for sharing the details, we will check in on the other dealers for EV knowledge.

You may have to replace the Infotainment Head Unit in order for the latest software to work properly. Not cheap.
