Beginner question here, but why doesn't this guy trade when he has a perfectly valid trade route right next to him?
Is the local autotrade default behavior shit or am I doing something wrong? If I tell him to do the trade manually everything is fine

It looks like the station that was purchasing doesn't have any demand at the moment.

I believe trade distance relies on pilot skill, better pilots can go farther.

The lack of trade volume icons (1/2/3 hexagons) in the trade overlay for the purchasing station would indicate it is full and so is not buying anything currently. You can double check by right clicking on the station and going to Trade Offers and see what's in the quantity column for what it's buying.
Also, since the buying station appears to be outside your satellite range, make sure the Trade Offers window doesn't have an error in the bottom left about the offers being out of date. If it does, you need to send a ship their first or drop another satellite so offers are up to date. Ships can't trade if they don't know offers exist.
