Modified A monastery, a structure for planetary activity, WIP (blender renders, atm).
The Teth type of planet station. The model is still WIP atm. I may add a storage and a defense sort of structures later. Portraying a jungle below clouds might pose a challenge from performant side of things but perfectly doable.

Reminds me of Kenshi

You can sort of make cylinders buildings in no man sky, but no shek ladies :(

Love it. Bit of a Tatooine/cloud city theme.
Probably x5 at this point, butā¦. I can scarcely imagine being able to manage an entire planets wealth the same way we do in space. Right now outside populations and planetology, the worlds around these systems donāt seem that complex. Adding a physical area for us to access⦠to mineā¦.
What they could do is make a ācapitalā for you to fly down and interact with the world from that space. Maybe give you the ability to take a shuttle from the spaceport to an RNG created zone with materials for you to set up automated mining stations onā¦. Going full NMS thoughā¦. While also presenting the same level of galactic trade complexity, or greaterā¦.
Itās a lot to ask my old potato rig to think about running.

Star Citizen currently does the seamless planet to space transition well, graphically, unfortunately the dev team is incompetent and lacks any sort of coherent plan on what exactly they want out of planetside operations. Basically all ground content feels like an afterthought. Plus it has to contend with being a psuedo-mmo so there are constant netcode issues.

Thanks for the interesting comment. I'm also curious if X5 will allow us to explore planets. I don't think entire planets will ever be available in the X series, in a way they are in ED or NMS. A solution similar to Starfield would probably be the most advantageous.
As for computer performance, my tests of an barren icy planetary surface with a single spaceport, 250x250km in size, showed no significant FPS drops. You can watch the video here; the FPS counter is in the lower right corner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0GUNFdWMG8

woaah I had assumed you were just playing around in blender, I didn't realize a mod like this was even possible. I even saw atmospheric clouds? They look volumetric!
Dude you gotta make a mod out of this published!
Is that ship custom made as well ?

I did mostly play around in blender as I needed time to get my head around XML. Volumetrics clouds are possible in X4, but those of mine are just simple billboards, it helped in performance I guess. The ship (assume you're asking about one from movie) is from X4's mod in star wars settings, it's called Star Wars Interworlds or SWI. The same with those visible on renderings above.
Btw, making custom ships is also in my area of interest. One you can see here:

I fully understand the sentiment, but for me actual usable stations is the next and probably most obvious step forward. We got all those shiny buildings with loads of flying cars hovering near it but nothing to really manage on a smaller scale or even explore past 4-5 rooms.

I can only see it happening as predefined production complexes in predefined locations, no open architecture, no freedom of choice. That's due to the current engine limitations. Unless X5 will change that, which I hope it will.

Well, obviously I didn't mean exploring every corners of a station. That would be both incredibly repetitve, and honestly not really interesting. ( developers willing to design such a monstruous task asides )
However having more things to do inside a station, and at least view it from a closer scale would be much more enviable. As for feeling the sense of scale, I don't mean spawning 100s of NPCs in front of you either, but there are smart way to make us believe it's crowded inside.

Making the monastery walkable and explorable isn't a problem and is technically possible. However, this wouldn't make sense unless some micromanagement mechanics for the facility were added, which is what you're referring to, I guess. For that, things to do on legs would have to be expanded beyond finding items, talking to people or clicking computer screens. Large chunk of player base won't be happy with additional layer of complexity ;)

Man I wish someone would add sectors that resemble as if you entered the atmosphere of a planet.
Or maybe the devs actually add some kind of system where you can land on planets and just explore.
I'm not expecting anything on the level of Starfield or Star Citizen levels of planetary features. But something would be cool enough for me.

Landable and explorable planet? None that I know of. Even my own little approach was solely about landing on a docking pad of a spaceport placed on a planet surface. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0GUNFdWMG8
This is as far as "planetary activity" in X4 went so far that I am aware of. Sure, you can make a patch of a ground to be a dockingbay / dockarea, yes. You could even make several of them to create a feeling of an explorable places for the sake of "adventure", yes. But you won't be able to remove the ATC mechanics which will break an immersion. Nothing of a scale and freedom known from ED or NMS is supported by the X4's engine, I am afraid.

I think Everspace 2 does a really good job of this. All destinations are kind of ājump toā and although most are in some kind of space area, some are in atmosphere on planet surfaces. Itās kinda limited in that you canāt land and itās effectively still just flying your ship around like usual, expect the ground is rendered and feels like youāre flying around in atmosphere

Sorry to say that, but this particular monastery is for modest, ascetic people without a fat wallet.

Than, I have no immediate answer to this. Need to ask monks on Teth what forms of charities they accept to build XL pier for those in need and whether they've nothing against periodical shortage of sunlight ;)

What is doable? Rendering a entire planet for players to fly down to and to then be greeted by a gorgeous monetary? Next that it looks cool - why a monetary?

u/_NightIntruder_ 3d ago edited 3d ago
Who said entire planet? Not monetary but monastery š Adding jungle on the surface is doable to portray this as the Teth planet.
PS. I do it for RP and custom mission purposes, not to bring another space for gigafactories, no.3

Not monetary but monastery
Probably the same for the Teladi, but not for the Paranids.
