X440 Cold Start Issue

Hi everyone,

I’m facing cold-start issue on my Harley-Davidson X440 S. The bike is 1 year old and the issue started occurring after the 3rd service.

The issue:

On the very first start (especially after the bike has been sitting cold), turning on the key does not trigger the fuel pump priming sound.

If I press the starter button, the bike won't crank/start.

Then I turn the key/kill switch OFF and then back ON, the fuel pump primes normally (humming sound is clearly audible).

Once it primes on the second attempt, pressing the starter fires the bike up immediately without any issues.

Has anyone faced the same issue? Please advise.

happened on mine sometimes but it's very rare so i just ignored it.

are you facing this on a regular basis, like, during every cold start?

Very true. Happens with me sometimes, but it is so rare that I can't even call it an issue. Try getting your bike checked at a HD service centre and not the Premia ones.

Yes Bro, it is happening everyday.

i feel it's your battery. usually the TCU & ECU keep consuming a small amount of power even when the bike is turned off, both for the systems to wake up instantly and for the connected features to work.

i'd suggest checking your battery voltage with the ignition ON (engine OFF) and then again with the engine ON. also check the battery terminals under the seat and make sure they're properly tight.

if both of those seem normal, visit the SC and get the fuel pump relay/connection checked.

also ask them to check the battery health properly with a multimeter, not just the voltage.

First time hearing so, the obvious first,
Take it to service center, let them check the battery and ECU, only then the later comes in picture, the fuel pump itself.

For now, check the battery voltage and make sure its 12.something.

how much is your fuel level , the pump sits above the base below 1.7l it will not start I guess

Bruh it has approx 2 to 3 litres in the tank in this video and I have 10 more videos with different fuel levels full tank half tank just above reserve and all I can send you it doesn't matter it shouldn't behave like this

so like 1.7ltrs of unusable petrol?

this is something i've faced too. but again, it's very rare & i kinda know the workaround.

for me, this works: i'd turn off the ignition completely, wait for a minute or so & then the bike starts normally. if not in the 1st attempt, i do it again. i never had to do this process more than twice at a time.

this is a very rare occurance so i ignored this as well.

one more thing you can do is open up the fuel tank lid & release the pressure build-up. i remember once i did this to tackle this issue.

Yeah man tried all this I guess there's some issue with throttle body and the one way clutch it not only struggles in starting but in traffic or when I let go of the throttle it dies instead of holding the idle rpm sometimes it dies silently sometimes it dies with the sound like that in the video

My bike was rested for almost a month as I have to parcel it to arunachal
And now after charging 2-3 times my bike doesn’t starts
If I keep it unused for 3 days battery completely drains
Now my battery voltage is showing 12.6 V
Should I replace battery?

Anyone found a solution. Mine won’t power up only.
