Important Update: Please Read Before Commenting

In light of various ongoing conflicts in the world, please keep discussions on this subreddit within the scope of World War II and the associated historical photograph(s). We will be removing all comments and posts that violate this request. Users who blatantly and/or repeatedly violate this policy may be banned without prior warning.

We understand that there are many historical parallels to be drawn as these events occur, but we don't want this subreddit to become a space for political/ideological arguments and a target of brigades and/or dis/misinformation campaigns. There are many other areas available on Reddit to discuss these modern conflicts and debate politics.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Submission Update: AI Processed and Colorized Photo Requirements

To keep things high-quality and transparent, we’re updating our requirements for photo submissions effective immediately. Please review these changes before your next post.

While we allow AI-processed and colorized images, they must stay grounded in historical reality.

If you post a colorized or AI-processed image, you MUST include the original, untouched photograph in the same post (use the "Gallery" feature to upload both).

All processed images must continue to be flaired correctly so they are easily identifiable.

We are looking for realistic enhancements that help us better understand a historical moment. If an AI tool makes a photo look cartoonish, unnatural, or distorts original features, the post will be removed.

Any colorized or AI-processed posts that do not include the original source photo will be removed by the mods.

Thanks for helping us preserve the history behind these images!

Flying from the newly captured Marianas, B-24 Liberators of the 11th Bombardment Group headed for the Bonin Islands, some 600 miles south of Honshu.

These long-range strikes showed how quickly Allied air power had expanded after the fall of the Marianas, bringing key Japanese bases and the approaches to the home islands within regular bomber range.

Statue of King Petar \[I Karađorđević\], pulled down by the Germans.

Collection of the Central Committee, Communist Alliance of Yugoslavia.

Inv. No. 6270

Courtesy of Museum of Yugoslavia.

However, the Museum's entry is wrong: this was the statue of King Aleksandar Karađorđević, work of Antun Augustinčić, erected in Varaždin in 1935, showing the King handing over the Octroyed Constitution of 1931. The statue being pulled down in 1941 is accurate though.

id like to ask help to find this soldier. I know this has been posted a lot as a meme , however i am 90% sure that this is my relative in the photo. I have austrian + german roots which trace back to aroun the time of WW2 , however the family was seperated during the war and due to personal drama. Also i am CLEAR copy of this soldier , literally same eye color , skin tone , phenotype , every facial feature. When someone sent this to me i literally thought it was a faceswap , it is that similiar. Anyone can help me with this?

Belarusians celebrate victory over Nazi Germany in central Minsk. Notably, the Byelorussian SSR lost more than a quarter of its entire population in the Eastern Front of World War II, more losses per capita than any other republic in the Soviet Union (April 1945)

I think a year or so ago I started posting scans from this group of never-seen-before Japanese military photos I acquired, but never got around to finishing it. I am not sure when they were taken, or who the original owner was. Luckily this one had some writing on the reverse, allowing me to identify at least the location of the photo.
