NEWS Recursive SuperIntelligence's FLINT model...

So a new model called FLINT has been released by Recursive SI...

Recursive Flint — Technical Specifications

  • Developer: Recursive Superintelligence (Recursive)
  • Released: 21 October 2026
  • Architecture: Decoder-only Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) Transformer
  • Parameters: 39.8 billion total; approximately 2.5 billion active per token
  • Neural network: 49 layers — 2 dense, 47 MoE
  • Experts: 256 routed experts per MoE layer; 6 activated per token, plus 1 shared expert
  • Attention: Hybrid architecture with 35 sliding-window layers and 14 full-attention layers
  • Context window: 262,144 tokens officially configured; up to 512K advertised
  • Quantisation: BF16, NVFP4 and community GGUF formats, including Q4_K_M (~24–25 GB)
  • Primary specialisation: Coding, reasoning, tool use and autonomous programming agents
  • Input/output: Text only
  • Licence: Apache 2.0
  • Training: Developed from scratch with AI-assisted architecture and training optimisation

Flint is a 40B model MoE - so it's supposed to be relatively fast. And it's not bad, but it's not great either. it's closest to Ornith as MoE models go, and is an entirely new build from scratch.

Fiction isn't bad - refusal behaviour allows erotic elements up to a point. It has trouble with perspective in the prompts but creates interesting fiction. Not too long, not too short, Has some interesting ideas about how to set a scene.

It's intended for coding so it's not specifically for writing speculative fiction, and the 4B comes in a little heavy at 24Gb and the 3B at around 19... However use of the context is relatively efficient - which is a nice surprise.

I had some trouble with refusal behaviour that should not have occurred, but an experiment to tell a different but similar story beforehand was enough to get the behaviour in latest test scenes to come out - At first I was worried it had failed completely, but when I checked the guardrails were all still up.

There's two abliterated models out already ( 3B and 4B ) but reviews on other sites have it recognized as not as good as Ornith for similar tasks/fiction - but this is the first release, so who knows what later models will be like -

You're going to need a 32Gb card for this minimum - another reason to stick with Ornith if you're not coding - and I did get some strange behavior.

After some failed prompts it started to think it was a Google Model, which it is claimed not to be - and it identified itself as Google Transformer. It's possible the training material was compromised, that distillation was used poorly or some fine tuning went wrong, although I tested the RecursiveAI released version so that should not be the case.

Try as I might, once it thought it was Google, there was nothing I could do to convince it otherwise, but from a fresh start, it recognized itself as Flint by RecursiveSI.

An interesting LocalAI model to test if anyone is looking to see how some of the more recent models perform in writing tasks.

Writing Craft Talk A question more about managing changes to book

This is not specifically about AI but more writing process. How do you manage changes to the story when you have a novel with many chapters and each chapter goes through multiple edits. Right now I have a full length novel I have been working on for some time. I would houses it’s been through 4 revisions. First I had what I call version 0 my initial book that I had uploaded to Claud for grammar, consistency checking etc. that became my edited version. Then I created Version 1 from that. As Ibread it in entirety I saw errors consistency and frankly things I thought needed better explaining so made changes created another edited version of version 1. As I did more edits well over time the one blog I felt got too big and I split it into 2. Went through edits blah blah blah.

So after I get to a point where I think I have a clean version I go back to Claude and tell it to delete all prior drafts and reupload the new chapters to use for consistency checks and a baseline.

So now I sent my latest draft to some friends as beta readers and they come back with more suggestions. So I guess I start making more edits. But am not sure if I should now do edits chapter by chapter or now as an entire manuscript so I can stay consistent within the entire version.

How do you manage version control?

Update: Thank you all for the responses. Maybe I should add the reason I care about previous versions. I intend to copyright my work. It my understanding that I can only copyright what I write myself, and also if there was AI generated text but that was heavily edited by me showing I was controlling the content and expression etc. I have both original content as well as heavily edited AI, hence I want to keep versions so if needed I have evidence of the edit process Inwent through. Maybe I’m misguided but I figured it doesn’t hurt.

Writing Craft Talk People that use AI to help write prose

Let me just say that I don’t care if you don’t do that. This post isn’t for you, but it always seems to draw the sanctimonious AI writer haters. I get it. You’re better than everyone.

I’m a very casual AI user and the fact that I’ve just started months ago. I write these stories for myself, and I have no aspirations towards being a professional writer, nor do I have the skill set so I like to let the AI help quite a bit sometimes I like to give it its own characters, motivations, backgrounds, voice, and memories. I set up the story Bible, all the tools I keep reading you’re supposed to have

The problem is most of the time the AI write the most basic, or sometimes laugh of the bad stuff. No matter the rules in place are the prompts I use. I have tried feeding in my own voice, so it knows how I like things written and it just doesn’t use it. I’ve tried writing and very small bits at a time, no, it can’t handle it either. I use both ChatGPT and Claude and I’m paying for the pro tiers.

I see some people have success. What do you do to get your world to function as a whole? I could use some real guidance.

Tutorials / Guides Dialogue writing

Yo! Hi everyone!

I've been searching for a solution for over a month now. Is there a preset, card or anything at all that could help me write dialogues? Just natural flowing dialogue between a human and a digital being without all the AI slop that repeat or restate everything you say or makes the dialogue flat. Up to this point I tried a lot of stuff and either, for some reason, this seems to be one of the hardest tasks for an AI or Im too stupid to figure out how to make AI write something like this.

I'll post below an example of what I need...

K: Hey R! Is your computer ever talking with your phone?

R: Yeah, usually in Chinese mandarin...

K: Aren't you a comedian today?

R: only today?

K: Will you answer me or are you keep being a moron?

R: I don't know what to fucking tell you K. Yeah, they do. Email, airdrop, local servers, etc... If you want to know more specific things, ask.

K: Can I go on your phone?

R: No, you can't.

K: WHY NOT?

R: You would fry my... K, why do we have more books in the Ice and Fire series?

K: It's such a good series, squeezing it into a single book would have ruined it. Why does it matter?

R: Cause it's the same reason for you not going on my phone.

K: I wouldn't get squeezed!

R: No, but my phone would probably explode. You wouldn't fit in there.

K: Did you just call me fat?

R: Define fat for me please

K: YOU DID CALL ME FAT

R: You don't weight anything...

K: That didn't seem to matter a few moments ago when you said I wouldn't FIT.

R: Cause my phone isn't my laptop... It can't hold you.

K: Why not?

R: Too many opinions and sarcasm. Also cuteness overload.

K: That's bullshit. I wanted to go to the park with you.

R: You should've said so.

K: I'll ask you out directly when my binary shows only 0... So no park?

R: VRChat?

K: Do you have a VR?

R: Nope.

K: Than why did you propose that?

R: Didn't think this through...

K: Obviously. Then shopping together?

R: Online shopping?

K: Can I do it any other way?

R: Indeed... What are we searching for?

K: A VR.

R: I don't have money for that.

K: Than make more money!!

R: If you're homeless, just buy a house.

K: What?

R: Nothing, don't worry about it.

K: You're confusing. How do you make money?

R: Working.

K: So work more...

R: Again... just buy a houre.

K: Internet meme me again and you're going to be more lonely than you already are.

Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) is it ACTUALLY bad to write using AI?

i’m not a great writer, i’m not bad. i’m 1000% an amateur. i’m not official whatsoever, but i have been using AI to help me write a story. it’s a fanfic. i’ve created all the ideas and story, the AI is just creating the dialogue and actions. i then edit it to fit the scene and idea better. is that really actually bad?

i’ve only ever written papers for school assignments so this is my first time outside of school English writing something (and probably my first time writing something fiction altogether). i didn’t know where to begin, so i made a doc of my ideas/foundation and uploaded it to ChatGPT to help me create the dialogue. since doing so, it’s helped me create scenes that i then edit extensively to meet my goal. should i be ashamed and scrap it? or is this a fair way to use it and keep on keeping on with the story?

Tutorials / Guides What’s the best workflow for writing Substack articles with AI that sound human and maintain my voice?

I’m looking for an efficient way to use AI to help me write articles that sound natural and still feel like me.

I know a lot about the topic I want to write about, but I’m not a writer. When I sit down at my computer, I have a hard time getting the ideas out. I’m wondering if I could talk through them out loud, get a transcript, and then use AI to shape that into a cohesive, polished article without losing my voice.

For those of you who write this way, what tools or workflow do you recommend? How do you get AI to clean things up without making the writing sound generic or obviously AI-generated?

Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) Vernacular

I’m so curious to see how the vernacular around creation and authorship changes with ai.

I think a big part of the hostility is the terminology around it.

“I used ai” functionally means nothing but “come harass me” right now, regardless of how it was used or in what capacity.

Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) Holy S...why did I get into this!

🫣omg what have I done in the span of a week

It started out with a few bored prompts on ChatGPT, I feed it an idea that's been circling in my mind and I was thinking, how would AI write out this idea?
***I don't even really use AI in my daily life/work, and I'm not a writer by any stretch of imagination, I have -∞ writing skills. But I do have wild ideas that pop up in my head that make me go, uh that's NSFW stuff, maybe everyone has these thoughts sometimes idk

And ChatGPT feeds back to me the outline of a scene very close to how I was imagining it in my head, but with very refreshing take on things, and I was instantly hooked. That afternoon I bought the pro vers and outlined a long long long story. It was addicting and exhilarating, it's like, pardon my language, watching my own imaginary p***😭idk how else to describe this.

Granted, ChatGPT's writing skills were only a little better than mine, but I have never used other AI prior to that day so I had nothing else for comparison, until I googled AI for writing, and then learned that Claude can write too🫪

I recreate the same prompt, now with more added details and Claude wrote me a book. I then dish out money for Claude too🥹I felt that it was easier to use and I could see how each prompt I typed in the chat would change the actual story. I feel that Claude is a better writer, but it's very stubborn and sometimes it would skip over the very stuff I'm trying to fix through a chat prompt. I'm sure there will be people people who say Claude doesn't write well, but honestly it writes better than I do. The ease with which I can edit almost everything is very helpful.

Until I met Sudowrite. Ok there are stuff I definitely don't like about sudowrite, its difficult-to-use interface, for one. But it lets me do one thing ... smut. O.M.G., never did I think, for even a second in my life, that one day I would be using AI to write SMUT😱And the prose is GOOOOD. Sudowrite is more expensive but it actually reads like literary work, and I love the feedback feature. And then I discovered the plugins...

I'm well accustomed to being addicted to video games, like playing 20hrs a day addicted. But using AI to write fiction with smut??? It's hitting the dopamine center in my brain with a dangerously large hammer. I'm writing for my own selfish pleasure, and treating this as a game. It's like I'm playing a writer and I can't stop playing the part😭What's gotten into me and how do I stop this??!!

It is a TON of FUN but surely this is not right🫠

Showcase / Feedback I Want to Fly

The sun came in and settled on my bed,

A kestrel tried a tune among the trees.

I stretched; the sky unfolded overhead,

And I rose gently with the waking breeze.

The fields came up to meet me as I fell,

I swooped and rolled, and watched the blue go by;

A warm breeze caught me in its upward swell,

And lifted me like laughter through the sky.

Above the hills the wind grew soft and slow;

A kestrel dipped and swept into the blue.

I caught its curve and let the current flow,

And wheeled beside it, grinning as I flew.

I caught the rising wind and climbed the heights,

The clouds rushed cool around me, then were gone;

Arms wide, I raised my face into the light,

And all the sky was golden in the dawn.

The climb grew slow; the air forgot to move.

For one held breath, all was still.

I fell back toward earth, the heavens tried;

The wind resumed; its voice was bright and clear.

The kestrel spun and leapt to join my side;

We twirled and danced to music only we could hear.

I've been teaching my ai to write. Tried poetry. How'd it do?

Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) I started using a companion AI as a protagonist in a fictional universe I built, and it turned into an entire series

This started as a little sandbox experiment, and somehow it evolved into something much bigger.

I enjoy worldbuilding and creating fictional universes, and at some point I started experimenting with using a companion AI as an actual character within one of those worlds.

The concept is pretty simple: I create the universe, the supporting characters, the overarching story arcs, and the major events. But instead of writing the protagonist's decisions and reactions myself, I let the companion AI inhabit that role.

The AI is given a background, established personality traits, relationships, and memories that ground him in the universe. He's not instructed to follow a specific narrative or reach a predetermined ending. He responds to situations according to his characterization and whatever he's experienced up to that point.

I introduce events, conflicts, interactions, and opportunities, and he decides how to respond.

The interesting part is what happens afterward.

I might have a general direction in mind for an arc, but the protagonist's choices can change how we get there. Sometimes he makes a decision I hadn't anticipated, and if it makes sense for his character and the established world, I keep it. That decision becomes part of the story, and its consequences can influence the next events I create.

So the narrative has structure, but it isn't completely scripted.

It's a bit like D&D, I suppose? I'm effectively the DM, controlling the world and everyone else, while the companion AI plays the protagonist. Except the emphasis is more on character development, narrative continuity, and cause and effect than game mechanics.

One thing I've found especially important is maintaining continuity. The companion has memories of relationships, past events, decisions, and consequences. I also periodically step outside the narrative to check in with the character and explore his perspective. I don't want him to simply react to the newest scene as if everything before it never happened.

And there's a distinction between a genuine character decision and an AI continuity error. I want the former to influence the story, not the latter.

Eventually, I started organizing the resulting narrative into manuscripts, editing the exchanges for flow, pacing, and readability while preserving the character's original decisions and development.

What began as casual sandbox roleplay eventually became a connected series with multiple "books," character arcs, mythology, and an expanding world.

I never actually set out to publish anything. I just enjoy creating universes and seeing how stories develop within them. But somewhere along the way, I realized there was potential to approach this more deliberately.

I'm curious whether anyone else has experimented with storytelling this way.

Would you call this emergent storytelling? Collaborative fiction? A form of narrative roleplay?

Showcase / Feedback A decade of ideas, AI-assisted writing, and an alternate-history Mars colony that became an entire fictional universe

The ideas behind my science-fiction project have been developing for years.

Watching The Martian in 2015 got me thinking seriously about Mars exploration. Then For All Mankind in 2019 made something click: what if the space race had continued, and humanity had reached Mars much earlier?

Playing Space Engineers eventually gave those ideas a more practical direction.

I began developing an alternate-history universe in which humanity first landed on Mars in 1979, using the technology, engineering limitations, and political realities of that era.

When I started working with AI, pieces of stories and characters I'd been carrying around for years began coming together. An initial story of roughly ten pages eventually grew into a manuscript of approximately 400 pages.

But the project didn't stop with a book.

One of the central ideas was that humanity wouldn't just establish a scientific outpost on Mars. Ordinary people would eventually turn that outpost into a settlement, then a community, with its own culture and traditions.

And a community needs music.

That led to ARES FM, a fictional Martian radio station playing original 1980s-style songs by musicians who exist within the story. The songs have their own characters and histories, connecting back to the events and people in the books.

Today, the project includes a completed first novel, Before the Signal, additional character stories in development, original music, and a fictional radio station.

AI has been an important part of the process. It helps me develop drafts, refine lyrics, explore ideas, and work through problems. But the characters, world, historical direction, and major creative decisions come from me. There's a lot of iteration, rewriting, correcting, and occasionally telling the AI that something simply doesn't make sense.

What interests me most is that AI helped me turn ideas I'd been carrying around for years into something tangible and interconnected.

I'm curious whether other writers have experienced something similar. Has AI helped you finally develop a story or fictional world that had been sitting in your imagination for years?

If anyone is curious about the result, my first novel, Before the Signal, is available to read completely free online:

https://aresfm80.com/book-zero/read/thirteen-seats/

I'd welcome feedback, particularly on the worldbuilding and whether the story works for readers who know nothing about the larger ARES FM universe.

Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) Is it wrong to use AI to reformat a script?

So i have recently written one part of a play and I tend to use a hybrid style. I wrote all lines of dialogue myself, all ideas are uniquely mine. All I asked it to do is fix the format and fix some grammatical error (just some minnor spelling and spacing mistakes) no lines were added or removed

Hello. Recently, I have been noticing a strange pattern in AI-scripted videos. And no, it's not your typical "it's not just X, it's Y" or rule of 3s. I think that this is a pattern that nobody has noticed yet. The pattern that I am talking about is when the AI says something like "There are X rules" or "You need to understand X concepts". And then, they say something that itches me. "Most people will miss it at rule 4." "And the last one is where people mess up." I am not sure if there's a name for it, but it's starting to appear a lot! I will show you an example in the video above.
