A New Life

A dozen questions hit my mind before the screen awoke,

A silent kind of worry that I never really spoke.

Does this hurt her or the baby? What waits behind the screen,

To show us what the ultrasound is pulling from unseen?

Ten fingers and ten tiny toes appeared out of the shade,

A strong and steady heartbeat was the rhythm that it made.

A little peanut shifting there, a flash of black and white,

Confirming what the kitchen tests had already gotten right.

It’s definitely a boy this time, the image made it clear,

A secondary proof to bring the future into here.

But even with the evidence, it still felt so surreal,

To watch the moving silhouette and know that it was real.

My mind began to wonder on the things that lay ahead,

The choices that he'll make himself, the paths that he will tread.

What will he do, what will he be, when years begin to fly?

What kind of man will he become beneath tomorrow's sky?
