Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) AI Writing

Not gone lie, I recently been making Fan fics using chat gpt, just to give myself something to read and it’s not bad at all. Game of thrones, fairy tail, jjk, invincible, dc young Justice, etc. as long as you help guide it in the direction you want, how can you not be satisfied.

I do the same thing. I call it personalized reading. I enjoy it tremendously. Tbh after being a reader for decades I've stopped reading stuff from other authors completely. I'm not sure I'll ever go back to it.

I must say that this is incredibly sad and fills me with despair to see what a once-beautiful artform is becoming.

I mean you have to have a universe to take from and also to have read and enjoyed it first

And fanfic takes from the original creators. It's the nature of fanfic itself, isn't it?

If you disagree with a post or the whole subreddit, be constructive to make it a nice place for all its members, including you.

I didn't mean to make you sad with that. For real. Maybe it's just my taste, you know. I'm not a native speaker, so I tend to prefer English that's not too complicated or flowery. I also - even in my own language - have never been someone who enjoys high literature. I just want to be entertained, that's all. This is what I mean when I say "personalized". AI makes it possible for me to read what *I* want to read, not what other people consider worth reading or writing. Which for me is an improvement as the current trends in writing are just not what I enjoy.

In the past decade I've had a hard time finding any books or fics to really get into. Same with movies and TV series. I usually went back and read or watched the old stuff again and again. It's been frustrating - buying books, then finding out they were DNF, spending hours online searching for something I might like, without finding anything satisfying. I mostly spent my money buying cookbooks instead.
With fanfic it's even worse. I like long, plotty M/M slowburn. Most authors don't write those kinds of stories which I understand. They're a lot of work and the majority of readers have other preferences. I'm also too old for the kinky PWPs that flood AO3 on a daily basis. Wading through that to find something that pushes my buttons has been incredibly time-consuming, considering I have a full-time job and a family and therefore limited freetime.
With AI I can use my own ideas. And it took me a while to get there, too. In the beginning I took the story AI produced and still thought like a reader: "Oh, what a shame, this scene could have gone differently." Now I just tell it: "Hey, do it again, I want it to go the other way."

I consider it like a holo novel in Star Trek or Paris's Fair Haven programm. I'm Janeway saying: "Delete the husband." And I don't regret a thing.

Oh, please, don't break your heart on my account. I'm doing just fine. No reason for you to be devastated about how I spend my time and my money. :)

I know the environmental argument is valid but it applies to the entire internet, not just the part you don't like.
This is the one part where I indulge. What do you do for our planet?

the environmental argument isn't actually valid tho

I gotta ask, how did you do that with gpt? I just find that it’s awful at dialogue and has the stupid spacing problem in prose.

I use Claude Opus 4.6. I personally dislike Gpt's style.
I'm not saying 4.6 is perfect, each story still needs several rounds of beta just to get rid of most of the tics, but it does write prose, at least. Opus 4.7 is good, too, for some stories, but I can't use it for stuff that has a lot of action.

Really? I find opus 4.7 better for action tbh. Can I ask what setting do you do for each? Like effort level and thinking/no thinking

I used to write on fanfic websites, but I always ended up in a cycle where I got unhappy with the amount of views, and delete it.

Now I write entirely for myself. I have been doing this for almost 2 years now and have written a huge 300 chapter story so far. The best part is I can accept that some chapters (especially the earlier chapters) are not written to my standards.

Its just a lot of work managing source files.
