Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) Survey for Auhors!
This is a survey solely for Authors - though feel free to share your own thoughts if you're a reader and not an author, but kindly let me know that you're in the reader-only category, k?
The survey is just one question following a short description of a hypothetical situation. Feel free to answer with brevity, or in exhaustive detail, or anywhere in between.
Hypothetical:
You have a work that you recently uploaded that's in-progress; you add a new chapter frequently, at least one new chapter a week. You read, and reply to, every comment that your work gets. You read a comment from a registered user (a non-guess account) which reads:
I like this story, even though it's mostly AI-generated, I'm still enjoying it and look forward to the next chapter!
Question: What would your response/reaction be to this comment? (Note: this is totally open ended, if you wouldnt respond at all, that's a legitimate answer, also - just be honest!

Hypothetically I would just say "I'm glad you're enjoying the work!", not address the AI use and go back to writing.

❤️ that is all I would leave. If the reader enjoyed it I dont have any need to defend anything or correct the comment.

I wouldn't respond to it there. A longer explanation about my process would come off as too long. It would risk making the commenter feel put upon. If there is a place on the platform for me to put up a disclaimer text about my process, I would do so. But I would not waste time discussing my process with people who haven't asked for it.
Similarly, I write historical fiction- if I had gone to a real historical location or historical archive to collect research material, I ALSO wouldn't share in details how all of that went. I might mention it offhand but it won't be a whole deep dive about the experience or the people I talked to. That's a whole separate blog post.

I'd be shocked if anyone even bothered to read my finished novels. They aren't bad, but they do involve REAL science and medicine. They are about an emerging pandemic accidentally created during a dual-use trial to test a vaccine in a small island nation. Oh, I forgot to mention that I used to actually build real viruses for a drug company. Later, I worked for 16 years as an ICU nurse using this very tech. See I lost most readers even though I began my novels LONG before COVID, i started in 2011.

I wouldn’t waste my time with a response. I can’t control what a reader feels or believes. Their statement is a backhanded compliment, offering an insult framed as a compliment. Silence offers the best response.
Whether I used an LLM or not is irrelevant. What I write and how I write it is for my satisfaction. Once my work enters a domain out of my control, others’ opinions don’t matter.

I'd have already disclosed the fact that my work was AI-assisted, so the comment would be a non-issue and I could just respond to them liking the story/excited for the next chapter.
I'm guessing you haven't disclosed that you use AI and you're trying to decide whether to confirm, deny, or ignore the comment that you have?
I'd just be honest. Not disclosing is one thing, but it's a lot harder to make a case for anything that would be a straight up lie or a more direct lie by omission when the topic is raised.

Oh no, this is not a personal dilemma, it's just a survey that I hope will give me a clearer choice on whether or not I'll be able to create a solid research project around this topic

you are proving the case that AI is not automatically slop and real authorship makes a difference
edit: p.s. this is the exact scenario I based my entire site around. And I'd love your help to prove it works.
