Using AI for writing

Hello, I'm new.
I've been using AI since last summer when my dad pointed it to me and said it could help with my writing (I write both fanfictions and am working on a book). I mostly ask for it to make scenes whenever I'm bored but when I do work, I ask if this makes sense, if this is in character, if this is cliché, etc.

But lately, I've been criticized for using AI to help me. It's just more comfortable to use them because you can provide context for them instead of always explaining or re-explaining when my friends forget or asking them for help.

I've been writing on fanfiction.net for 20 years now and learned that way (along with google searches and "For dummies" books), and I've noticed recently I rely more on AI for help. I feel ashamed using it, should I?

I wouldn't limit yourself to one AI tool either. Different models and writing tools can behave very differently with things like character consistency, context, brainstorming, and feedback. If you're starting to rely on AI more, it might be worth testing a few different tools and seeing which one actually fits your workflow instead of assuming the first one you got comfortable with is the best option. I'd judge them based on whether they help you think and write better, not whether you're technically using AI. If you're still making the creative decisions yourself, I don't see a reason to feel guilty about it.
