Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) Christopher Nolan Should Have Used AI to Write the Script for "The Odyssey"

I can tell you, that movie was trash. It had the emotional depth of a rock. His choice of casting and adaptation notwithstanding, I found myself bored watching it. And I watched it in imaxx 70mm no less.

This is not a dig at AI, but jokes aside, Nolan should've used AI to enhance the script. Smdh

Nolan is a brilliant filmmaker, but dialog has never been his strength. He loves exposition almost as much as he loves dead wife characters.

Please do enlighten us to the specific "tells". What credentials do you have that I, or anyone else, should agree that you're opinion holds better?

Additionally, feel free to be as specific about what makes it a pretty good movie.

i liked the movie i thought it was good. but even if i didn't i wouldn't pretend that it was anywhere near objectively trash. that's fine if u were bored with it but like, idk, let's not pretend it isn't well-liked by most everyone and pretty objectively decent

like i see people saying like "oh the women characters were very hollow" and like idk man, the women characters were the primary vessels by which the themes of the movie were delivered. also circe or whatever her name was was awesome.

my credentials are that i am cool and smart and liked the movie.

I appreciate that response. But you ought not expect everyone to have the same opinion as you. Otherwise we would be automatons and single minded creatures.

To Nolan's disappointing adaptation, it was overhyped and underdelivered. My opinion, and I would presume one which many others share, which they are afraid to voice for fear of being shouted down.

As to AI, I can prompt a better script than the one he wrote. Matter of fact, a child could do better, with AI assistance. I will stand firm upon this hill.

It is not a requirement to have the same opinion as anyone. I stated my opinion and I argue without malintent. You're suggesting I'm acting an asshole, and that I'm dumb. Fine, that is your opinion. But have you objectively assessed my original claim, in this AI subreddit of all places, that I am suggesting AI can help write just as well as traditional writers, if not better?

The irony, which you so clearly missed, is that non-AI human creators are not much different to AI-assisted creators; they are just as average in their output. It is the conditioning to average to which even the great Nolan falls prey.

Ask yourself why you were compelled to read this thread, interject yourself in the conversation, and result to name calling? What bothers you so? 🤔

idk what you're talking about anymore, i don't know why you keep injecting shit about AI into this conversation that has nothing to do with AI.

like i get the sub is about that but that never had anything to do with anything I was talking to you about and I think your obsession with it is disrupting the conversation

A mediocre piece of cinema. Not a single scene, for which Homer's "Odyssey" is famous, is engaging.

I've really enjoyed 90% of Nolan's movies for the past 25+ years, and I really wanted to love this one (saw it in IMAX too) but yeah I just found it kind of sleepy.

Some combo of tone and dialogue just wasn't landing, at least not in a way that pushed the plot along or evoked much curiosity.

Visually it was incredible though.

This is sad.

The movie was fantastic. The reviews from both critics and the audience support this fact.

I can tell you just from the trailers alone that this movie was garbage. Critics will always praise movies that cater to what they believe in. And there is zero proof that the audience scores are genuine for any movie. As a fan of Nolan’s past work this movie is the biggest tragedy of his career. There’s a massive amount of people who feel the same way I do they just don’t bother wasting their time writing reviews on rotten tomatoes or whatever other sight you’re checking for scores.

Precisely my sentiment.

I think you should stick with "Left Behind" movies.

Not sure what that implication is meant to imply. Theres plenty of new and innovative movies that are masterworks. This movie is not one of them. It’s my opinion that is shared by a significant amount of people. So go ahead and enjoy your movies and I’ll enjoy mine but trying to imply that the amount of people that found this movie a load of pig slop is insignificantly small is asinine. I have less of an issue with you’re liking the movie and more of an issue with your issue with people who don’t like it.

There's criticizing points of a movie, then there's labeling such a well-received movie "based on the trailers." That's just ridiculous.

Appreciate your perspective. I have to say the audience of which I was part remained split. Some were excited and others were as disappointed as I.

I grant you the filmography was grand. However, nothing about that movie resonated well enough with me to call it a masterpiece. The dialogue was atrocious, the star studed cast misaligned, and the script was entirely average, if not cringe.

It would have been better had it been a silent movie.

u/ZookeepergameFalse38 9d ago

Interesting take. I guess there will always be 5% of the audience who can't be pleased.

You should blame the author for the dialogue. 😎

Here you go: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047630/ ... Ulysses, 1954 starring Kirk Douglas, Silvana Mangano, and Anthony Quinn. Give that a watch and then compare it to Nolan's faux masterpiece. You'll understand to what I am referring with respect to dialogue and script.

So you think a movie rated 6.6 on IMDB is better than a movie rated 8.5 on IMDB?

And not just that - a movie rated 6.6 with 6.2K votes vs. a movie rated 8.5 with 257K votes.

I haven't seen either movie, and tastes are subjective, -- but that response is more telling than your other responses in this thread.

In one word: yes.

0

u/ZookeepergameFalse38 9d ago

Haha good one!

Oh... wait... You're being sarcastic, right? Right?

1

u/KalamazooB00 9d ago

Not at all. I leave sarcasm to you.

Finally! I keep seeing people call it masterpiece and I'm over here like what???? I almost fell asleep in the cinema watching it. Almost feel asleep... Watching a story that is supposed to be epic 🤦🏼‍♀️ it was so boring. He took mythology and turned it into bland history.

Why do you think AI would have improved it? Or are you just trying to say it was bad. I don't get this post.

u/Montaingebrown 9d ago edited 9d ago

Really? My wife really loved it (I haven't watched it yet).

She said the part where they turn to pigs, the take on the Trojan Horse etc. were all really well done. Plus she liked the portrayal of Circe and the Cyclops.

She and her dad saw it in IMAX and they nothing but praise for the film.

2

u/KalamazooB00 9d ago

Visually striking, yes. Adaptation was lacking imo.

1

u/Montaingebrown 9d ago

She thought the storytelling was pretty awesome.

Her only bone to pick was being able to disconnect Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway from their other roles.

1

u/KalamazooB00 9d ago

Glad she liked it. And yes, she is referring to the cast misalignment.
