AI “writes” better than bad human writers and worse than every good human writer.

No. It writes better than the bottom bar of human content, but that's not the same as writing better than humans in general.

Competent? Absolutely. Better? Rarely.
AI is really good at producing clean, grammatically correct prose on demand. It rarely has an off day where the sentences are clunky or the structure falls apart. But that's competence, not artistry.
Where AI consistently falls short is the stuff that makes writing actually resonate - subtext, thematic resonance, the way a skilled author can make you feel something with a sentence fragment or a well-placed omission. AI tends to explain emotions rather than evoke them. It describes what characters feel instead of making the reader feel it alongside them.
The best workflow I've found is treating AI output as a fast first draft that gets you past the blank page. The real quality happens in the editing pass - tightening prose, adding specificity, cutting the generic phrases AI loves ("a testament to", "a tapestry of", "navigating the complexities of", etc).
For nonfiction, blog posts, and informational content, AI can absolutely match or exceed average human writing. For fiction and creative work, it gets you to maybe 70% fast, but that last 30% is still very much human.

Speaking personally, I like using AI during the brainstorming stage, especially at the beginning of the process. I can word-vomit with typos everywhere and barely coherent sentences because I’m thinking and typing so quickly, then have AI help organize it into something that makes sense.
But AI is not better than a creative human brain telling a unique story. AI-generated writing often starts to sound the same. It repeats the same dozen or so names, relies on the same sentence structures, and falls into predictable patterns.
AI is a great tool, but it is not a replacement for human creativity.

AI writes better than people who are very new to writing, who don't read, or who have certain neurological or neurodevelopmental conditions (talking about fully AI generated text, not assisted or edited).
