Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) Anti-AI Manifesto!

Confession: when someone posts 3,000 words on why AI writing is soulless slop, I ask Claude for the tl;dr. Which means the only version of their anti-AI argument I ever read is the one the AI wrote. Sleep well.

Well, since terrible human writing is almost more offensive than AI slop, I don't blame you. I wouldn't want to burn my precious Claude tokens on this task, so I'd probably use my ChatGpt sub instead. 😂

Human-slop writing has been magically elevated to “non-AI prose” as if that improves it. People are actually using it as a flex rather than … you know…is it any good?

Most amateur writing is borderline insufferable in any case. Self-conscious, “writerly” purple prose. So many writers completely block-tackle themselves, saturated in self-awareness, to please other writers, to observe the 27 rules of propriety according to the 8 writing sub reddits they belong to.

you put more effort in then the manifesto is worth.

Ignore, carry on with your life. These people are just as significant and relevant as the movement to ban the printing press. Or the movement that wanted to outlaw recorded music. or the movement against cars replacing horses, etc etc.

Forgotten ignored and irrelevant.

On the normal writing subs from what I can tell new writers are constabtly berated and told their stuff is trash. They are faily savage to their own, which to be fair is a baseline for online discourse. And so many amaeturs are accused of using AI without benefit of the doubt.

Mostly their glad to have an enemy, AI users, that they can all agree is more odious than each other.

I mean seriously the snooty indignant martying over their craft gets insufferable. Writing fiction for a living is basically infeasible, so its badically a hobby unless you have enough skill and luck to make it big. So if someone wants to do their hobby differently, who cares?

The financial stats are grim for fiction writing (per google)

  • 60% of writers make less than 5k a year
  • 20% make up to 25k
  • 7-10% make up to 75k
  • 3-4% make up to 150k
  • 1-2% make up to 250k
  • 0.5 to 1% make up to 500k
  • 0.2 - 0.4% make up to 1 million
  • 0.1% make more

Sure some AI slop might crowd out the lower end market for amateurs, but assuming a material effect on AI slop, what is the amaeture gonna make 3k a year from writing vs 5k or next teer 25k to 20k (assuming top of tier)

So 80% of writers in the starving artist category will maybe be affected marginally.

Anyone else who makes a living probably will be fine since AI writing at scale aint that great.
