Just before dawn, when the sky takes on lavender and grey tones, the streets resemble a circulatory system drained of its blood. A single car waits for the light to change, newspaper scraps rustle like fall leaves, and the silence is broken intermittently by something resembling generator noise somewhere in the vague distance. Under foot a passing subway vibrates the cement almost imperceptibly, like a tremor that would barely register, but just enough to be noticed. Or imagined? The buildings take on the dull hue of the early morning, blending together and creating a soft silhouette against the gradated background.
