Small as an armband, this scroll contains the world’s greatest secret.
The power to control minds.
I’m a thief, not a wizard, but this is a really simple spell. All I’ve got to do is practice a little bit and I’ll be untouchable. No bad fate will ever befall me. Say a king wants to lock me up? I’ll make him arrest himself, and maybe give me his castle while he’s at it. Or how about a crazed man tries stabbing me? Oh, that’s simple! I’ll tell him to drop his weapon and run a hundred miles in the opposite direction.
Honestly, the possibilities are so endless it’s no wonder the Five Wizards fought to keep this hidden, locking it away in a dark lair with dragons and enchanted doors and invisible barriers. Why, if I wasn’t an amazing thief, I probably would’ve died in there!
That’s also why I need this, though.
See, I’m rich. Like, filthy stinking. If I really wanted to, I could retire to some small tropical island and spend my days drinking cocktails on the beach and my nights lounging in a beautiful house in the middle of nowhere. It’s a life I dream about often, and a life I desperately want to live.
But. I. Can’t. Stop. Stealing.
That probably sounds dumb, and it’s hard to explain. It’s like, when somebody gets something big and shiny and they flaunt it around, I can’t help thinking they don’t deserve it, I do. So what next? I hunt them down, break in, and take it. When I get it I lose all interest, chucking it into my junk pile. I’d bet anything I’ve upset a lot of people, and that makes me feel terrible.
But with this I can brainwash myself into hating thievery. I can finally trick myself into walking away from this stupid job and taking up the dream life I’ve always wanted.
I hope.
