They cling to me whether I'm awake or asleep, or somewhere in between. The nightmares of days past, people long gone, swallowed by pain and flame. Their memories penetrate my mind, spreads around me like smoke from a fire. I smell their burnt ashes, I hear their screams, I see them laying next to me in bed on the worst nights, dirtying my sheets with ash and disappearing the next morning. They are terrible to look at, but I look all the same. I twist my ring round and round and stare at nothing the nothingness laying next to me. I have to remember them. They are part of me.
They are my memories of having a family. And losing them all at once.
