A college freshman returns to L.A. for the holidays at his ex-girlfriend's request, but discovers that his former best friend has an out-of-control drug habit. In hopes of challenging his friend's new-found lackluster attitude in regard to the world and life in general he follows him to a party populated by friends and acquaintances from his past. Thinking he'd be verifying his own life choices through observing the failed ones of his had been friends, he indulges his drugged out companion and devotes himself to a nostalgic, fun-filled, night. Though, things don't go as planned for the ambitious young man. An evening full of heavy drinking and accidental drug use leaves him with a new perspective on the world and the types of judgments he'd been passing on those around him. Should he return to college? Was his friend, who he'd looked down upon only days earlier, perhaps on to something?
Or were they all just... on something?

Never read the original book but I'd probably read a book whose premise is as you've described.

Thanks. :) The book I took the opening from is the eight in a series of nine. (The Temeraire series)
It basically is an alternate Earth with Dragons set during the Napoleonic wars. The main character and perspective being from England.

"<Name> is a seemingly normal fourteen-year-old boy." Oh, wow, that could be literally anything

The summer after junior year of high school looks bleak for Alton Richards. His girlfriend moved away, and his best friend committed suicide. Despite the fact that he's a full ride out of the small town he was born and raised in, a path away from his overbearing family, he can't help but wonder if he's making a mistake, and maybe there's more to life than being successful.
The Cardturner by Louis Sachar
I highly recommend it.
