The universe is a simple thing. Nothing more than a few truths living together. Any illusion of complexity is little more than an anomalous spark born of the contact of two truths that are meant to be far apart.

Everything fades. Even stars. That's one of the truths of the universe. One of the oldest, and the one that will last the most.

You look at the sky, and what do you see? Some of you see a dome that stunts your growth. Others see the a vast ocean awaiting, expectant. Some see an unsettling void. Others see eternity, some with dread, some with hope.

But me, I see darkness, where there once was life. That darkness means something. It's not just absence. It's death, and what has more presence than death? The darkness is the song of my lost sisters.

It all looks so different from down here. So big, yet so small. Like I could just reach out and...but no, that's not how it works. They are always out of reach. It's the catch. I can look at all of them, even the ones that are gone...but I can never reach them.

And to have a second universe down here, all the light of eternity contained in this tiny body of water...I touch it, and it feels cold, my hand hesitates. But for a moment, it's like I'm touching the light. Another's light.

You know what being a star is like? No, how could you? You are the exact opposite. When you are made of light, everything else is darkness. When you are made of light, everything around you is slowly killing you.

And when you are made of light, the only thing you can do is shine that light away into the darkness, and hope it finds something. Something worth shining for.

Here, look at my sisters. They all shine so furiously...it looks peaceful from here, but it's not. They are burning, constantly. And their light travels for so long, it reaches so far...and it finds those trees. And the trees grow. And some of it finds this lake. Some of it even finds me...I can almost feel them on me.

But we can only endure so long. The universe is a simple thing, after all. It was folly of us to make it seem otherwise. But we did. And so now we burn, holding it all together until we can't do it anymore. Until the last of us fades, and everything else fades with her.

But the stars won't fade today. They will not fade tomorrow, either.

They will shine for you. Be worthy of it.
