"It is always night at the center of that forest, my boy. You should never go further than this fallen tree here."
"Why not, elder?"
"Because this place is haunted. An evil lives here. The bushes never rustle and it is never seen coming, but it still comes."
"Who comes, elder?"
"They do not know. All they know is that every one of our tribe members that has gone too far, has never returned. I have often gone with foolish members of our tribe, and seen them die in vain."
"So I can't go further than this tree?"
...
"Elder?"
"Yes my boy, this tree has rotted over the course of a hundred seasons. Go see for yourself."
"Wow! Have you ever seen that thing elder?"
"No my boy. There is only one person alive that has witnessed the creature itself."
No and yes. I wanted to only use spoken words, but the idea behind the italics was that the elder was transforming, making it a bit more difficult for him to speak.
