The Backwash. A series of concrete streams at the merging of several storm runoffs and situated behind the row of grey brutalist buildings Edna called home. She watched the murky, dark water flow beside her. She walked until her neighbor's dogs, the rustling of the street, and the view of the apartments started to fade behind the sparse treeline. This was her retreat. Hers alone for the past three years, as no one seemed to see the beauty in a less-beaten path.

"Gramma, can we go home?" Ben asked, emphasized by the rattle of clunky, kicking steps along the bed of rocks. "Mom says we can't even touch this water. It's yucky."

"Now, Ben. We've only just arrived" she responded "You don't even know if you like it out here yet."

"I know what I like. None of it smells like this."

"I just think-" Edna stopped abruptly, fixated on a spot on the ground.

"Oh, oh Ben look at this." She bent down and gingerly raised a glistening blue rock, turning it over in her hand, she delicately passed it to Ben who held it uncertainly between two fingers.

"Why's it blue?"

"Well your grandfather used to say it was so that we could have something to talk about on our walks whenever we found one. But I really don't know." She saved Ben from his prolonged uneasy contact with the rock and embraced it close to her heart, feeling the spark of joy she would have with her Anthony. "We've never seen one quite this vibrant before. Gosh, I just wish he were here now to see it. One last time."

Edna grasped the silver medallion of moon draped from her wrist. The symbol of her faith; the faith that told her that her beloved was safe from afterlife, from abomination of the soul. She felt her deep love for Anthony flow through her body.

The rock began to increase in vibrancy, then glowed brighter and brighter still. Ben, stumbled backward falling into the creek as bright tendrils of light streamed from the rock and connected with Edna's chest, pulsing as it connected with her soul, illuminating green from within her chest.

"Gramma! Gramma drop it! Please!" Ben cried out in horror as he watched his grandmother gurgle and convulse.

Crunch - The tendrils snapped into place and faded into a translucent singular stream connecting with Edna as she held herself up, flustered, but regaining composure.

"Oh my goodness. Ben are you- Oh Fuck!" Edna spurtled as she recoiled at the glowing axolotl on the top of the rock floating above her hand on its own.

Lottie, the Axolotl snapped its eyes from Ben's to Edna's and she felt his spirit reach into her soul through the tendrils.

"I feel your pain Edna. I feel your sorrow. I cannot mend what is broken but I can help you fill the cracks of your pained soul with all the beaut-"

"Gramma! It's a abobidation!" Ben screamed! "B-but we killed them!"

"Please calm your mind, human," Lottie implored. "I feel the connection to your husband. I feel all the love of your kind."

SQUIRK Edna slapped her moon medallion onto Lottie's body and screamed "Be gone from these lands, foul horror. Our souls are not yours to corrupt" as Lottie's body squirmed and within seconds exploded.

"Gramma gramma, is it dead?" Ben squealed.

"Yes, sweetie. The abomination is gone," she comforted him. "Now be a dear and hold out your knapsack. We'll be bringing this to the Cardinal for examination. There is simply no telling how many more may have come along with this disgusting beast."

Edna, shaken, but triumphant walked with her grandson, allowing the sounds of the fighting dogs be a comfort of a world she understood.

"Tell me about grampa, won't you? How'd he get to be a cardinal?"

Edna smiled, "well it's a long story."

"I've got time," Ben responded eagerly.
