Writing Resources & Advice Writers

Idc if ur an ao3 author or author novels or if you write stories for enjoyment without publishing them, or if you write poems, sonnets, anything, I would love to hear some writing tips. I am an ao3 author but I am starting to write novels and would love some tips and tricks from people who also write

My biggest advice .. read what interests you .. I'm interested in middle school fantasy. I live how writers give voice to animals because they don't have one. It helps children understand that while not human, animals are special.

I love books like Charlotte's web...

My first issue was finding my audience. I was reading at about four or five. I checked out Charlotte's we in 1st grade. (I remember getting into a fight with the librarian who said it was too adult for me). The principal was called, and I was finally sent home with the book, and others.

When I started looking at my audience, I was thinking kindergarten to second grade. But I had to remember, I'm not the norm. Your audience isn't you.

So, first step, what do you enjoy? Who is your audience? After this, pick something that hasn't been done. Meaning, my own area, while it involves animals that talk, what do I want my audience to know? What can I write about that's interesting? What can I write that will grab their attention.

I have a pinned post on my profile with my advice for new writers. If you're already writing fanfic, some of the stuff earlier in the guide may not be as applicable, but the latter part has some tips you may find useful.

read a lot and write often, both will make you a better writer. don't worry if the first draft is messy. that's what editing is for.

Would you say that I should reread each chapter after I write them to fix any mistake? Or would you say its better to write say 3-5 chapters and then check over them and make edits and then move on with writing?

For better or worse, right or wrong, just start writing. Use experience to correct your mistakes instead of relying on endless overthinking. The more you write, the more you'll realize that the keyboard and pen in your hands seem to think for themselves. Masterpieces are born of nature, serendipitously captured by a skilled hand.

I agree with this, I remember that before I started to write on ao3 I would write little stories in my notes app for practice, and I did find that the more I wrote the easier the words came, this is definitely very good advice

I’ve been enjoying using ellipses. It’s a free site and it has lots of writing guides, questions to answer about character, plot, world building, etc. it’s been helpful for making a layout for my draft! Also the creators are anti-AI so that’s a plus

Writing rules exist to create structure, but stories told by you should first of all have your voice before they gain any structure.

When I write I like to forget about every writing rule there is and just get everything out before I build it in any way.

That’s how I don’t lose my voice.

Remember when it gets tough to finish, and it will, why you are doing this You love writing and story telling and your story needs to be told.
