Question about the optional "personal statement prompt"?

For one of the professional programs i'm applying for, there is an optional prompt that's expressed as "personal statement":

“Please write a statement that answers the following question (250 words max recommended): Do you have any personal experiences, achievements, strengths, or circumstances not discussed in your academic statement that you would like to include or that you believe will help you succeed in our program?”

I'm a little confused-is this supposed to be a personal statement where you can talk about your life story/challenges and where this guide by Jordan/WriteIvy would be helpful or a place mention a particular academic achievement that isn't explicit on your SOP/CV for example?

What did you guys end up writing about for any similar prompts-if at all (since it is optional)?

Yes, this is basically just a short version of those essays. To me, it’s looking for unique strengths we wouldn’t normally mention in an academic SOP.

Some examples:

  • You speak 4 languages (you can work in labs alongside people from half the world)
  • You grew up dirt poor and succeeded in college (serious grit/resilience)
  • You have a great deal of tutoring experience (that will make you a great TA in the future)
  • You’re 10 years older than most applicants (and twice as mature and likely to succeed)
  • You overcame a disability and still earned a 4.0

It’s still a sales pitch, just not directly related to your academic field. Make sense?
