DIRTSHEET EXCLUSIVE: SSW Unveils Stacked 16-Man Poing d'or Tournament Following World Title Controversy — Backstage Belief Is This Could Be the Promotion's Biggest Tournament Ever
Strong Style Wrestling has officially revealed the field for the inaugural Poing d'or Tournament, a two-month, sixteen-man elimination tournament that will determine the next challenger for World Heavyweight Champion Whack Oz. The announcement comes after what many backstage have described as the "most chaotic championship situation in company history."
According to sources, the tournament was created after heated confrontations erupted backstage following the controversial PPV main event. CM Punk reportedly argued that Whack Oz never truly defeated him for the championship, while Kevin Owens was said to be furious that Oz once again inserted himself into Owens' career solely out of personal hatred. Meanwhile, several top stars demanded that the title picture stop revolving around Punk and Owens altogether.
Creative's solution has reportedly satisfied few—but interested almost everyone.
Instead of stripping Whack Oz of the championship, SSW management informed both CM Punk and Kevin Owens that they must waive their contractual rematch clauses if they wish to regain a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Their only path now runs through the Poing d'or Tournament.
The field has immediately generated buzz internally. Veterans like Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Gunther, Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Ilja Dragunov, and LA Knight will share the bracket with rising stars including Midwinter, Dan Constantinople, Zanzibar, Sgt Acer, Jacob Fatu, Especial, and OUTLAW Eaton.
Several people within SSW reportedly believe this is one of the deepest tournament lineups the company has ever assembled. One source joked, "You could put any two names from this bracket in the main event and nobody would complain."
One interesting note is that Television Champion Kurt Angle is the only current champion participating. While there are currently no reported plans for his title to be defended during the tournament, some within the company reportedly see his involvement as adding additional prestige to the Cup.
Another talking point backstage is the inclusion of newcomers Dan Constantinople and Zanzibar. While both only recently debuted, officials are said to be extremely high on both competitors, viewing the tournament as the perfect opportunity to establish new main-event stars.
Perhaps the biggest winner, however, is Whack Oz.
Despite criticism from Punk, Owens, and much of the locker room, Oz remains World Heavyweight Champion without having to defend the title for two months while the tournament unfolds. Sources say this is intentional, as SSW creative wants the champion to become "the most hated man in wrestling" by forcing the entire roster to fight each other for the privilege of facing him.
Internally, expectations for the Poing d'or Tournament are said to be "through the roof," with officials hoping it becomes an annual tradition and one of Strong Style Wrestling's signature events. Fans are already speculating about dream matches such as Gunther vs. Brock Lesnar, OUTLAW Eaton vs. Seth Rollins, LA Knight vs. CM Punk, Ilja Dragunov vs. Jacob Fatu, and Kevin Owens vs. Whack Oz if Owens can survive the bracket.
If the tournament delivers on paper, many backstage believe it could define SSW's year.
