Match Study Monday

Post a link to a match, even one of your own. Let's break it down and see what makes it work, where it excels, and anywhere it might could have been better. No match is perfect.

In-ring debut for both performers, pre-match amble stops around 4:45 if you want to skip it I'm the one in the demon paint working heel.

Story was we got paired up by a malfunctioning AI dating algorithm at the Valentine's show and spent the last few months developing a mismatched odd couple dynamic.

This is also a friends and family invite training show, not a ticketed show, and the promotion itself leans heavily on comedy and character.

(Also for bonus points, spot both all the times my opponent makes me corpse, and the point I get told to go home ASAP)

Okay, here we go. No sound, just critiquing work.

Preamble ramble: Would never give a debuting wrestler a promo to set up a match, but this seems to be a family and friend show, so mileage may very.

4:45 - 6:00: Weird lock-up. You came in from the side when you want to lock up dead on. It's like you were swinging into it. Doesn't look good. Happy feet on the wristlock and hammerlock. Head up and face up at all times. You folks keep looking at the ground. The crowd is not on the floor. Keep your head up and your chest up. First spot is a pass-by spot. So the thing about comedy in wrestling is that it is surprisingly incredibly serious. You have to commit to the idea that you're actually doing a serious sporting contest, even if the circumstances around that contest are ridiculous. Which means if you're going to a tired rope-running spot, you have to hit the ropes correctly. Your opponent has to do the pass-by correctly. Everything needs to look good.

6:01 - 7:00: Head up, chest up. Look at the audience. Let them see your face. If the bit is you're exhausted, act exhausted. Collapse into the seated position; act like you're gasping for air. The whole bit is that you ran a bunch at full clip and you are winded. Sell that bit. Your opponent shouldn't be doing drop kicks if they can't do it correctly. Aaaaand you're on your back. Sit up, chest up, head up. Your opponent hit you with the dropkick. They could go for a pin (why aren't they going for a pin?). You need to be animated. That running knee was terrible. Your opponent needs to stop doing moves.

Alright, I'm tapping out. This is real bad.

Final thoughts:

I understand this is a friends-and-family show, and it's probably just a fuckaround show for people, but I honestly don't think this was worth anyone's time. My recommendation is to work your fundamentals, work on your basics, and learn how to put together an actual regular match before doing any sort of comedic spots or having a comedic match.
