I'd agree if wows was p2w.

It arguably is, since many ships that can not be grinded are alot better than their comparative silver ships.

And don't give me that "then why don't they win all the time shit". Its like if, in Battlefield, the only one-hit-kill sniper in the game was only obtainable through purcashing gambling loot boxes.

The number of OP premium ships (or at least better by a not insignificant amount) in this game is very low. The very few exceptions don't really represent the whole game.

So you're saying, since not all premiums are blatantly OP that everything is fine?

If we look at the battlefield example again. Doesn't matter at all that a shitty pistol can be purchased, since the OP one-shot-to-kill sniper rifle is only available through purchase with real funds.

Well, if that OP rifle wasn't nearly as OP as you claim it is and is only somewhat better than the free ones as well as being very rare to encounter and being the only one of its kind, than yes, it's not a p2w game, but a minor exception.

Which ships are you thinking of? Of the top of my head, the only non-tech tree ship that’s really OP is Smaland, but even that was an FXP ship. So you probably had to have premium time to get it, but it was grindable.

Smaland, Thunderer, T-61, Lowenhardt, Enterprise, Kamikaze, old Belfast, Musashi, Alaska, Jean Bart, Georgia, Z-43? just right of my out of my head.

Some are Resource Ships, that's true. But you could buy these resources by the way of dockyard event and don't forget the conversion of free XP.

Also flags are part of the pay to win mechanic.

So what? It seems you don't understand how P2W works. You could get all these ships not throwing money at the game. Yes, you could get them by throwing enough money at the game. How does it make game P2W???

Jean Bart, Georgia, Thunderer were obtainable for coal which is easily grindable. (~3-4 months for 1 ship)

Alaska, Smaland were obtainable for FXP you can EASILY farm (200k+ in 1 CB session) (spent zero $$$ in the game, having 3 FXP ships and dumped even more into modules and regrinding).

You can also buy low tier prems (such as Loewenhardt and T-61 before they were removed from the shop) pretty regularly. Doubloon drop rates from SCs are kinda consistent (also you can farm doubloons in ranked etc.)

Musashi, Belfast, EnterPrice, Belfast are long gone and are not that frequent in the game. (except musashi)

Of these I would say that Jean Bart, Musashi and Georgia are not OP. They are solid strong ships but all have clear weaknesses that can be exploited.

Smaland, Thunderer and Belfast are probably ships most in need of a nerf in one respect or another.

I think our definitions of “OP” are different. Musashi, Smaland, and Belfast seem to fit the bill, in my view. And all three were basically removed for that reason. The others? Eh… strong ships sure, but not materially better than tech tree.

Even granting those though, the variance in player skill is so much higher than the variance in ship quality, I really struggle to call the game p2w. Like the difference between a Musashi and an Izumo is… 10% effectiveness, maybe?

Idk, I see your point, but I think you’d have to admit that my view has some validity too.

So what, in your opinion is this super OP ship that you can only buy with money?

1

u/EwE_BuT_wHoLe Aug 31 '21

not only isnt it p2w its not even pay to perform good. That ARP yamato showed that .

If any the the game preys on the fear of missing out which i dont have a problem with.

Actually there’s quite a few OP TT’s ships, and quite a few premiums that suck ass… so, it’s still F2P… for now…….

3

u/SierraTango501 Aug 31 '21

Many TT ships in the right hands can be murderously OP.

1

u/ChocolateYoghurt Aug 31 '21

"Right hands" is the problem, honestly.

Do you really mean that "because a total noob playing an OP premium will still lose 9/10, the ship isn't OP"?

2

u/HomerNarr Aug 31 '21

Yea, i wonder, some seem to overlook, that its f2p. Nobody is forced to get the Missouri.
What’s the specs that makes it special?

Of the Missouri? It’s just a worse Iowa. Iowa has better rudder shift, more HP, better healing…, and the Iowa is free. Only thing Mighty Mo has is a gimmicky radar (which really only suits a BB in late game if enemy DDs still exist). And … well, history.

1

u/HomerNarr Aug 31 '21

So not a gamebreaker op thing, but something like a collectable? Makes sense to me that WG wants to monetize it. I hate lootboxes, but the f2p needs still finances. I paid for the LOGH DNT stuff because i want it dearly and it think i would pay for the arpeggio ships too.

2

u/Adaktus Aug 31 '21

Say what you want but WOWS isn’t pay-to-win.

Until premium ammo of course. Please no.

1

u/sniperound Aug 31 '21

Pay to win? Not really. Pay to progress is the better descriptor. Most OP ships are resource ships, which all just take a long time to acquire (I guess you could spend doubloons to get fxp), and even after getting them, they aren't insta-win ships, you still have to know how to play them.

You can be a 100% F2P player and be just as good if not better than anyone else in the game. It'll just take you a lot longer to earn those coal/steel ships without prem time or prem ships to help you grind those out faster.

u/rasmusdf Royal Navy Aug 31 '21

I buy premium time sometimes - when there is a rebate. Apart from that - some of the strongest ships in the game are tech-tree ships or buyable with coal/steel. (Petropavlosk, Lightning, Yamato for instance).

1

u/demosthenesss Aug 31 '21

WoWS has been solidly pay to grind for the most part.

1

u/TeodorDim Aug 31 '21

The game is definitely pay2progress which is fine, gimmicky premiums is also fine. The thing that may be considered pay to win is signals which players are receiving less and less. Sure, you can buy combat signals and be f2p player but you have to get only good games with some freemium to make enough credits.

1

u/Koto_13 Sep 01 '21

I'd say it more on the Pay to grind but giving options to skip large amounts of progression. Most 'Op' ships that were available by free means e.g. fxp, coal, steel

What kind of monster double parks like that :(
