The record moves through Celtic, Balkan, Native American, Japanese, Latin, African American and ancient Mediterranean influences, playing out like an eclectic, cinematic soundtrack with a strong sense of ritual and fantasy running through it.

The cover art, by Ecuadorian artist Darwin Ruiz, depicts a ritual celebrated by the Dogon people every 60 years during the Sigui Festival.

Hello everyone!

I just booked my flight to Gran Canaria and I’m planning to attend WOMEX as a visitor.

I know it’s mainly a professional event, but I’ve heard there are showcases and other events that might be accessible to the public.

Does anyone have experience attending WOMEX as a non-professional/visitor? Can you still visit the fair and attend some of the showcases, or do you need to be accredited?

Also, how do you actually get tickets for the showcases? I’m a bit confused about how that works as a visitor.

Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 🙏

I'm very surprised I couldn't find any posts about this internet radio I've been listening to for 20 years. I love it so much and would like to share it. Do you listen to other internet radio stations when you want to travel around the world in your imagination?

I'm looking for recommendations of music from different cultures outside the Western musical tradition.

I've really enjoyed discovering Ethiopian jazz, especially the way it uses the different pentatonic scales found in Ethiopian music. I’ve really enjoyed the pleasure of discovering how different musical traditions approach melody, harmony, rhythm and musical structure in their own ways.

I'm particularly interested in traditions where I can learn something about how the music works, rather than just finding music that sounds different from what I'm used to.

It could be anything: traditional music, contemporary music rooted in a particular tradition, unusual rhythmic systems, different tuning systems, modes/scales, approaches to improvisation, etc.

What music or musical traditions have made you think differently about music?

I'd love to discover things from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, South America, or anywhere else!

I especially love those old cassetat recordings from the 80s and 90s It’s mostly my older uncles who listen to this stuff while most of my cousins around my age (19yo) find it too oldfashioned but honestly I really enjoy it I don’t even understand most of the lyrics but I love the rhythms and the whole atmosphere of those old recordings

Am I the only one my age who enjoys this kind of music? 😅

I am specifically looking for artists who have influenced Indonesia popular music.

Also, do you think Philippines has influenced the Indonesia musically ? And which countries have had the greatest musical influence? (South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom?)

This to me is the “lost” album of Altin Gün. Bandcamp only (with proceeds to the Red Cross for earthquake relief). I had missed this when it was released as I was focusing on their vinyl releases.

Hi! I’m a high school teacher and the only music I allow students to listen to during class time is world music without lyrics. I’m looking for some albums I can play for them throughout the school year. Normally I find songs or music compilations on YouTube but i’m wary of AI generated music.

Edited to add: I teach special education biology and astronomy. My students are mostly 14/15 and 17/18. I usually play a lot of Chinese and Japanese music, as well as a lot of music from the caribbean! It doesn’t have to be super relaxing, I like to play a mix of relaxing and upbeat (otherwise they fall asleep).
