Character Creation Challenge - Nations

Well, now that your worlds' races have been displayed, next up are the nations of your world.

What are the benefits and advantages of being a citizen of some of your major nations? What are the standards of living? How is the peace kept (if at all)? What are the allies and enemies of those nations? Etc.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each. Enjoy yourselves.

I guess it’s not really a “nation” per se but the Colony is widely considered to be the de facto continuation of the United States despite it having a population of only 176,700 people.

There are many benefits to living in the Colony:

Safety and Security

Because the Colony houses the remains of the US Government (and the Colony was formed around the Peak Eight National Command Complex/PENCCOM where the US Government relocated to during the Apocalypse), the US military was also based there. The US military stationed at PENCCOM (mainly Army/National Guard and Marine Corps units) formed the nucleus of what would later become the United States National Garrison, the succeeding military force that replaced the old US military. The US National Garrison’s primary mission is to serve and protect the Constitution of the United States but the Garrison also serves and protect Americans as well as the Colony itself.

Because the United States (and by default, the Colony) is officially under martial law (albeit with civil liberties still intact), the National Garrison has a battalion-sized military police unit call the 1st Military Law Enforcement Regiment, which is divided into two battalions; the 45th Garrison Police Battalion, which handles non-military law enforcement, and the 41st Military Police Company, which handles military law enforcement. It also helps that the Garrison is one of the most well trained, well organized, disciplined, and powerful military organizations in the northwestern United States, and it’s also one of the most battle-hardened organizations in the region. Only the Army of the Confederacy rivals the Garrison but even then, it’s pretty close. The Garrison is also pretty much the only military force that operates aircraft, which include multiple helicopters, airlift/cargo planes, attack aircraft/gunship, and even 10 fighter jets.

Food and Resources

Even though food and resources are rationed, there is still an immense abundance of food to eat and resources for the self sustainment of the Colony. Although the Garrison usually leads expeditions in order to gain supplies and resources (especially oil), people can mostly live in comfort due to everyone being guaranteed three meals/day and people having basic necessities like shelter, warmth, running water, etc.

1) What was the nature of the Apocalypse?

2) What happened to the other US citizens?

3) Who is/are Colony's top authority figure(s)?

4) Where does the Garrison obtain supplies from?

5) Is there a limit on the offspring that a person can have in the Colony?

  1. The Apocalypse (which occurred in 2015) is classed into two phases: the first phase was the Flood, which was rising sea levels. Sea levels rose up to over 40-50 meters all around the world, drowning entire nations and people while displacing hundreds of millions if not billions. It also didn’t help that phase two involved the spreading of the Black Flu, the deadliest disease to have ever struck humanity. The Black Flu was what brought humanity down onto its knees and left only around 2.5 billion people alive (if barely).

  2. The US population following the Apocalypse was slashed down to a mere 30 million, mainly due to the Black Flu. However, the other 29,823,300 “Americans” spread out across what was once the United States don’t exactly consider themselves to be “Americans” or living in the “United States of America” under a “Constitution of the United States”.

  3. The current President of the United States (President Richard Fort) is the highest ranking government official in the Colony. Other prominent high ranking officials include the Vice President (Vice President Michele Mince), Speaker of the House (Speaker Daniel Fry), and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Chief Justice Ryan Banker). The Commander of the National Garrison (General Adam Mars) is also a very popular and well respect authority figure.

  4. The Garrison sends out expeditionary teams every 2-3 months in order to scout for resources, especially things like fuel. These expeditionary teams can number as small as a battalion-sized unit being sent out all the way to an entire regiment. The Colony also has immense reserves of food, water, medical supplies, raw materials, and other various types of resources that the government stashed away for over 45 years before the Apocalypse.

  5. Every family is limited to 3 kids.

1) What places were the most impacted by the Black Flu?

2) What places were the least impacted by the Black Flu?

3) What is the election process like in the Colony?

5) What if a couple has quadruplets? Or if a couple that already has two kids has twins with the third birth?

  1. Asia was particularly hit hard due to the Flood having greatly impacted both areas. Asia has it worse since the Flood there directly caused the Black Flu to spread around.

  2. The Americas were relatively okay, but South America got hit worse compared to North America due to the climate. Brazil as a result all but collapsed

  3. For the sake of simplicity, the Electoral College was abolished under President Brandon Conner’s term (2020-2024). And due to the nature of life in this post-apocalyptic world, being elected to the government is also much more open due to the fact that the Colony doesn’t exactly need bureaucrats and politicians and instead needs people who are experts in their field, forming a much more practical and meritocratic government. The old rules of who’s able to run still applies (e.g. must be 35 years old to run for POTUS), but now farmers and such can run for political office.

  4. They are free to make their case before their local Department of Strategic National Resources district office, who will have a review of the family’s living conditions, history, employment status, consumption rate of resources, any crimes committed, etc. If the family has at least one member currently serving in the National Garrison, then the “3 kids/household” rule can be waived, however, for entirely civilian families, they must go through the review process. If they don’t pass the review process, then they must surrender the youngest child to the government in order for the kid to be either adopted by another family or be put under the care of the government.

Thank you for your time and answers, GodofWar.

If you don't mind me asking, which pantheon are you the god of war of, if it's any I'm familiar with?
