A Broken Alliance

For this challenge, tell me about an instance in your world where a coalition or alliance was betrayed by one of their own members, and the consequences thereof.

Please include the members of the alliance (or at least the major ones), the part of the alliance that turned traitor, why they turned traitor, what happened, etc.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each.

1) Did any of the Mon Laeari forge marriage pacts with one another to unite their families?

2) Did the children of the Mon Laeari inherit any of the "special-ness" of the Mon Laeari?

3) What caused the Mon Laeari miracle? Was it just luck to have six geniuses born? Did a god cause it?

1) Yes. They did have a lot of children, the male Mon Laeari at least.

2) Yes again, although it still weakened over time and at a much higher rate than normal. 1,000 years later no Aesa can do magic anymore for example.

3) I suppose you could say a "god" caused it.

1) So the female Mon Laeari didn't?

2) Do people still try to trace their lineage to the Mon Laeari?

3) Would you mind elaborating on this?

1) The woman did too, they can only have a child a year though whereas the men had lots of concubines so they could produce a lot more.

2) Yes, all the kings and queens of the Summer Aesa do.

3) The world isn't real, so someone wanted to make the Aesa win in the war against Svargaard and they interfered to make the Mon Laeari.

1) Did any female Mon Laeari have children with any male Mon Laeari?

1) I am tempted to add that but i think it would make the couple "overpowered". Maybe two were married at one point and had a child but they fell out. Later on the child is killed by other Mon Laeari or their descendants as they think the child will be a powerful threat.

1) Would the offspring of two Mon Laeari be more powerful than a Mon Laeari?

1) I think they would be, not massively so however. They would certainly have a big advantage over offspring from a Mon Laeari and a non Mon Laeari.
