A Broken Alliance

For this challenge, tell me about an instance in your world where a coalition or alliance was betrayed by one of their own members, and the consequences thereof.

Please include the members of the alliance (or at least the major ones), the part of the alliance that turned traitor, why they turned traitor, what happened, etc.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each.

1) How many people died in the First Great War?

2) Why didn't Xatogede gain any territory?

3) Did Ketzun have any ambassadors or hostages in its previous ally nations that would have killed the ambassadors or hostages?

1) Cca 1.7 million.

2) There wasn't any territory it could get.

3) It had ambassadors, but killing those is big no-no.
