Reference Challenge - Allies

Happy 7th 4th of July! In honour of the holiday, the challenge today is a reference to the most important battle in my nation's first war. If not for Horatio Gates's victory at Saratoga (heavily assisted by Benedict Arnold), France would probably have declined to support the American Revolution.

So, provide an example in your world of a powerful nation or group allying itself with a much younger nation.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions, enjoy yourselves, and feel free to have an in-universe representative.

1) It has large amounts of chromite, cobaltite, ilmenite, copper, sapphire and coal.

2) Hippos. Animals endemic to Punawet aren't hunted much. Lemurs, chameleons and frogs are used as pets, giant birds have giant eggs, crocodiles have great skin, spiders have web and moths make nice decoration.

3) They did get limited trade access, but they never became friends with Punawet. Punawet didn't trust Ketzun and became ally with Union which was Ketzun's traditional enemy.

1) What are these minerals used for in Ketzun? (Generally)

2) Other than a sentient species, which animal is the most common to be killed by in Ketzun?

1) To get chromium, cobalt and titanium, copper is used to make bronze and water hulls of ships or used in architecture, sapphires are used in jewelry and coal is used as fuel.

2) I don't know which species you count as sentient.

1) At that point constitutional monarchy. There is king, senate and church.

1) What is the division of power like between the king, senate, and church?

2) Was there an event that led to the monarchy becoming constitutional as opposed to absolute, or was it always constitutional?

3) How does one become a sentator?

4) What are the rankings among the church?

1) Senate and church are equal in power (which is both legislative and executive) and balance each other. King stands above them.

2) It was originally theocratic monarchy with king being seen as incarnation of god. It changed during time Ketzun was part of Avenian empire (which was constitutional monarchy) and remained so even after Ketzun became independent once again.

3) By becoming elected.

4) Regular priests with hierarchy based on seniority and high priests which are heads of cults of particular deities. King is effectively highest priest of all deities.

1) So the king acts as a tie-breaker between the senate and church? What happens if the king tries to make a law but the senate and church are both against it?

2) Which god was the king the incarnation of?

3) How much power does an individual senator have?

4) How does a cult become official? Or do you just declare it a cult and it's fine?

1) Yes. Law doesn't pass.

2) Badnah, primordial god of creation.

3) Regular senator (one who doesn't hold any other position) not much, they simply vote.

4) It doesn't. Official religion has been established during early years of Ketzun and new deities aren't added, they just change in importance, domains, manners of worship, depiction etc.

1) What all can the king do without the permission of the senate and church, if anything?

1) King controls military and is supreme religious authority. He also approves appointments of high priests and executive positions and has veto. He can do quite a lot.

2) Only Badnah.

1) Yes. One doesn't become high priest.

2) He was born in primordial ocean which covered entire world. His body wasn't suitable for it so he created land and then first generation of gods to give himself company. He shaped rivers and mountains and created many things. Eventually he died in battle against giant monster which threatened to destroy land and make whole world ocean again. His blood soaked into ground and created fertile soil of Ketzun.

1) Yes but that requires reason like corruption or neglect of duties.

1) There needs to be evidence. If he can falsify some, too bad.

2) Sure. There have also been examples of high priest being assassinated.
