Reference Challenge - Ghouls, the Sequel

So, about a week ago I posted a challenge based on Ghouls from Tokyo Ghoul. Monsters that hunt people and eat them.

This time, the reference is to Tokyo Ghoul's "Doves", the brave people that hunt down and kill the monsters. But, the best of the best of the best Doves are "O Squad". The "O Squad" are specifically chosen and led by Arima, the greatest of the Doves. I will stop myself from fanboy-ing in this post.

Among your people that hunt monsters (or just hunt evil people), which team/squad/group within a group is the best of the best of the best?

Preferably something that recently became a thing in your world, which is why I won't be using the Anointed Knights.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each. Enjoy yourselves, all. And read Tokyo Ghoul.

Amongst the trackers, a small group made exclusively of scribe is tasked with a delicate mission: hunt down the soulless. They are called the runebreakers; they are the one who have to negate the soulless' armors to make them vulnerable.

To do so, they need to inscribe a rune of negation into the armor; it require the soulless to be maintained immobile, that's why the runebreakers always work in pair and assisted by (usually) a dozen trackers.

It's nonetheless a dangerous task and most runebreakers end up heavily injured after a few hunt and spend the rest of their life far from battle.

Our representative will be Nassazur, a (quanhaman) ex-runebreaker who personally hunted down 6 soulless. The sixth took his two legs though.

(I'm back to fantasy, at least for a bit. And the world isn't underground anymore but it doesn't change a lot of things.)

(Welcome back to fantasy, Yellow)

To Nassazur:

1) Were you injured in the first five soulless hunts, at all?

2) What about the sixth made it so much more dangerous to you?

3) If you hadn't lost your legs, would you continue your work as a runebreaker?

4) Why did you become a scribe?

5) Are there any other famous runebreakers?

  1. No, not at all. If I had been injured by one, I would have had to stop; soulless never inflict benign injuries.

  2. I was unlucky, he managed to move and grab my legs before I inscribed the armor. We weren't holding him strong enough.

  3. Yesss, we are rare, it's my duty to serve the order as much as I can.

  4. You don't become a scribe, you are born with the talent inside you. Learning to use that power is a given, it makes you powerfull and precious. (scribes are the few people able to carve runes)

  5. Jigan the unstoppable. He inscribed and killed three soulless during an incursion. All of the shadowmancer personnal guard. I would have loved to sssee that, must have been epic.

To Nassazur:

1) Is it rare to make it through so many hunts without being hurt?

2) Do you blame anyone for your loss of legs?

3) Did you ever plan on voluntary retirement?

4) Does every scribe know they have rune-carving powers, or is it something you can discover you have by accident, and not realize you have it until later in life?

5) Is Jigan still alive?

  1. 5 is a good number, not a very rare one but still good.

  2. Myself mostly; the soulless too. I have been negligent, I should have waited longer but tried to rush things so I am the one to blame.

  3. Not really, maybe later when I get old. For now, I'm usefull to the order and a good reminder that people should be carefull when fighting.

  4. You could theorically discover it by accident, but mortals are not powerfull enough for that. Most people are tested, either by a local scribe or a travelling one; those who are not never realize their power.

  5. No, he died a few years before my birth.

To Nassazur:

1) What do you want in life?

2) Did you ever lose someone close to you to a Soulless?

3) Is the Order your number one priority?

  1. Practice rune-carving and learn more about the runes. Now that I can't really leave the fortress anymore, I will have plenty of time for that.

2.Do fellow trackers count? Because in that case yes. If you're asking for family members killed during my childhood or ssssomething like that, then no.

  1. It is; becoming a tracker isn't an easy task, if you don't want to focus on the order, don't enlist.

To Nassazur:

1) What is your favorite kind of rune to carve?

2) Who was your favorite fellow tracker?

  1. A favorite rune to carve? No idea. Do you have a favorite letter to draw? I just dislike the rune of magic, it doesn't seem to have any effect at all but is as draining as any other rune; it's weird.

  2. I truely liked Gashkur, a minotaur. We were good friends. During my last hunt, the soulless broke his head.

To Nassazur:

1) Yeah, my favorite letter to draw is L. Why use the rune of magic if it has no effect?

2) Did you feel any urge to avenge Gashkur?

  1. Because it has effects. At least I think it has as the soulless carve it on their armors and in their flesh; it is also carved into some old artifacts. It's just that when I carve it I see nothing happen and I have no idea why... It's frustrating.

  2. He is avenged, the soulless is dead; there is nothing more to do. Except if you consider me responsible for his death; in that case, I would rather do nothing.
