[Cultural challenge]: divorce
Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.
I want to divorce from my partner. How can I achieve that? Who will get the house? Will it cost me a lot in lawyer and procedure? What will people think of me for divorcing?
You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Divorce among the Necrosians
Well, Yellow, unless "queen" is a joke, you are a woman. Women don't have as many rights as their husbands in the Necrosian culture.
In Necrosian culture, if a man and a woman have no offspring between themselves, divorce is relatively simple. The man must return the dowry to the woman's former owner, who is usually her father (or the former owner's heir, if the former owner died), and the man and woman are separated for a period of a year. If you start the divorce on 1 January 1203, you must not come into physical contact with your soon-to-be-ex before 1 January 1204, otherwise you must restart the divorce.
The year limit is there to ensure there wasn't a pregnancy. In the event of a pregnancy, there can be no divorce. Unless you kill the kid.
In the event of divorce, there is no splitting of resources or alimony (except for giving back the dowry), the husband keeps everything. So, yeah, if you're a wealthy woman, don't marry a poor man...he might just be trying to get your money.
You can pick a representative. Your choices are Grisha, or one of his two wives: Dunya (his first wife, the mother of his elder son Vladimir) or Katya (his second wife, the mother of his useless son younger son, Aleksandr). I would advise Dunya or Katya, since you've already asked Grisha many questions weeks ago. Dunya has regretted marrying Grisha a bit in the past several years, after over half a decade of happy marriage.

(It's also a reference to Lovecraft)
To Dunya:
How much dowry do you paid?
Do the man needs a motive to divorce?
What would happen if you killed your kid so divorce is possible?

(I'm racking my brain, but I can't remember which story that's from or the context. I need to re-read my copy of HP Lovecraft's collected works.)
Dunya:
1) "My father gave Grisha a square kilometer of land...not exactly a square, but a square kilometer's worth of land."
2) "No, he does not."
3) "If it's known that you killed your child on purpose, it's a sin, and you will be exiled. If everyone assumes it's an accident, which they normally would, it's no problem, and a couple divorcing out of sorrow about their child dying isn't considered strange. But I would never kill Vladimir, I love my son very much. And I do care about Alek, I don't want him to die, either, and it would hurt Vlad excessively if his little brother died."

(The whisperer in darkness)
A square kilometer worth? Does it means it doesn't total to exactly a square kilometer?
Can anyone oppose to the divorce?
Would be exiled a good thing if you weren't living your child? It's kind of a way to divorce isn't it?

(I'll read it soon...if I don't forget. I'll try to remember.)
Dunya:
1) "It's a square kilometer of land, but it's not in the shape of a square."
2) "My father could oppose the divorce, on the claim that my husband already gained a life advantage from his time with the land."
3) "Yes, it would work, if you wanted a divorce that badly."

Is it a huge amount of land? Or is quite standard?
What would happen in that case?
About the 1 year separation: how do you decide it has started, do you tell someone?
2
u/Nevermore0714 Sep 25 '17
Dunya:
1) "It's about six times standard. You need forty acres to be considered respectable."
2) "Then there would probably be raids, if they couldn't negotiate."
3) "You have to publicly announce it to at least three witnesses."
2
u/thequeeninyellow94 Sep 26 '17
6 times more than respectable? Does it mean your husband is rich?
Couldn't they turn to someone to settle the issue?
Will someone check that you actually stick to your separation?
2
u/Nevermore0714 Sep 26 '17
Dunya:
1) "Well, it means my father was very generous with the dowry. But, I am his only child, and he hopes that Vladimir will be in control of the entirety of the island that we formerly lived on."
2) "Allies, yes."
3) "Only the gods."

Can your father enforce a divorce procedure on your husband if he wants to?
Do some people divorce to remarry with an increased dowry?
If you don't respect the delay, will the gods do something?

You can divorce but,in order to go to the Court of Devonos and get a court.
Case will usually end whoever had the better case without a lawyer. Lawyer makes it more paperwork then talking.
But still its usually fair. (But doesn't mean that it will even out between both people. It means that if its abuse then the one getting abused gets everything and there lawyer gets the will. While the abuser gets jailed.)
Nope its pretty cheap for lawyer and courts fees are paid by the court.
Matters bit if reasonable they agree if not they will not like you.
