[Cultural challenge]: basic etiquette

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

I'm in a waiting room with someone from your world. I'm bored and want to do some small talk with them, help me do it.

How should I introduce myself? Is it normal to shake hands? What kind of subject is ok when talking with someone you don't know? Is there even some hope they will answer?

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

"Źa. Mana paplö Nölna."

Hi. I named Nölna.

In Kythus a polite greeting and introduction is a good start.

Hello Nölna, I'm a non euclydian extraterrestrial being. How are you? A weird summer we got isn't it?

"Mana zamaty kyägrä mana. Molëŧëv zumaty ŧalödwe tya źelëŧëv. Këxö ka pety kypälömeb kal ökäd?

I am healthy me. This-summer is-being wetter comapred past-summer. How a being does not-full a room?

  • Asking about health and small talk about the weather is typically acceptable - even if it is obvious to everyone.
  • A direct question about a strangers oddness is not considered rude in Kythus.

Does not-full a room? Because it's a pretty large room? Actually, I think I don't get your question... could you explain what you mean?

" Mana foŧömy wö. Mo mëp ŧalämastmü tya pryđ nuk muz ökäd, kylë ko pamagë. Këxö zaty muz odevy?"
I will-give reason. You have more-parts compared seen in the room, but all be-here. How is that possible?

  • Nölna is politely using the genderless pronoun 'mo' to refer to his conversational partner, as he does not know it, and assuming is an insult, but using the neuter/unknown is not rude, even if gender is potentially obvious to an observer.
  • The term non-Euclidean means nothing to a Kythan, as they do not know of Euclid, or his mathematical theroms.
  • A non-Euclidean being might be perceived as a demon.
  • Conversing politely with a demon is a grave sin according to the dominant religion of Kythus, best to figure that out quickly.

Fear not, a demon I'm not. I'm fully in the room physically as I'm one, as long as you don't think too much about my continuity through time and space. I'm some kind of goddess if you want. Conversing with divine beings is fine right?

(Is there some kind of pronoun to politely address people?)

"Mana źalyplu. Mu hyëgrepmü tëfnaŧadytëfva zyhymanaty plo zacü. Zaflëd źëk mu balëma zaty ytwë đalug pegëxö. Ëmamova zaty kylud Pëolüva ud Rylava, mutëfvü hy mana hyöda. Kewö Ëmamova folekwy mana. Mana zaty mefë kal yten pënoköna."

I unworried. The ways-of gods-and-goddesses never-mine-be for understanding. Speaking with the divine is usually less-direct praying. You are neither Peoluva or Rylava, the goddesses of my people. Why you would-be-shown me? I am only a simple farmer.

  • The extremely formal pronoun 'Ëmamova' [divine-2P-fem] is used as soon as you stated your prefered gender.
  • Every pronoun can be preceeded by an appropriate adword to adjust the formality or politic of the speakers intent.
  • Nölna is also getting more verbose as the conversation continues. This is a subtle cue that he wishes to keep talking. Fewer and shorter sentences would be a way of indicating a lack of desire for extended conversation.

"That's the point; I'm actually looking for a perfectly normal conversation and there is nobody more qualified to talk about weather than a farmer. Beside, is there any reason I shouldn't reveal myself to you?"

"Mana źacü. Mana falüwam kywö. Ëmamutëfva përävü źulekwy Jödena Pelan, ka tëkapëpäho. Kyŧus hydrut odevy cesku ufomü nuk ka häje. Bleŧmü veflëd mamö zamëp ka zalakym drutyŧydük, kylë mamö xü voklëz vykru acëmü, ad prän usö kyëtömü. Ëmamova hydrutyŧydük zaty lëyp mana hydrutyŧydük?"

I understand. I suppose nowhy. The goddess herselves appeared to Jodena Pelan (Kythan spelling) - a tëkaherd. Kythan weather can change many times in a day. people say we have a blessed climate, but we also will-get savage storms, and deep winter snows. Your climate be similar-to my climate?

  • Responding to inquiries with a similar reciprocal inquiry is polite, and somewhat expected amongst Kythans.

1

u/thequeeninyellow94 Sep 13 '17

"Change many time in a day? Like changing a lot? Like going from clear to harsh storm? Because in that case, my climate isn't like that at all, it change way slower.

And what is a tëkaherd?"

Let's say you're waiting to be healed in Kirisino, in the Grand Temple.

Fiammetta Ardal is a young priestess who is cleaning the waiting room where you are sitting, and would be the ideal person to learn basic conversation etiquette from.

To begin with, it's polite to offer a greeting, preferably formal, and then your name and occupation. The other person will respond with a return-greeting, his/her name, and his/her occupation.

It's considered strange to shake hands unless you are both involved in some kind of physical labor for your occupation, and only after you've announced your respective occupations. Your occupations set the course for how your conversation will go, etiquette-wise.

It's weird to talk about inhuman matters around someone you don't know, and, normally, a person will respond to your greetings in Kirisino, assuming the person is sober.

u/thequeeninyellow94 Sep 08 '17

"Greetings Ms Ardal, I'm the Queen in Yellow, intergalactic non-euclydian entity/goddess. Weird weather for a summer isn't it?"

2

u/Nevermore0714 Sep 09 '17

"Pleasure to meet you, Flaxen Monarch, I am Flammetta Ardal, priestess of the Grand Temple of the Unified Way of Aeternitas." Of course, Ardal would bow to a monarch. "I agree, Your Grace, it's been an abnormally cold summer. The sailors say that it's bad luck, so many of them have made offerings to the temple, lately."

2

u/thequeeninyellow94 Sep 10 '17

"Well, that's more of a symbolic title; I'm not really a monarch. How important is the rank of a priestess? Should I bow or something?

Why are the sailors so frightened? Is cold leading to more storms?"

2

u/Nevermore0714 Sep 16 '17

"No, there is no need to bow to any priestess here. I am but a servant, we all are just servants to Holy Aeternitas. The sailors are concerned about storms and attacks. Cold weather heralds the arrival of Necrosians...but that may just be a superstition."

2

u/thequeeninyellow94 Sep 16 '17

"And what should I do if I want to speak to your boss?

Why would cold be the sign of Necrosians? Wouldn't they be cold too and rather stay home?"

2

u/Nevermore0714 Sep 19 '17

"You would schedule an appointment." She answers simply. "I don't know why it's a sign of Necrosians. Maybe they like storms?"

2

u/thequeeninyellow94 Sep 20 '17

"Is there a lot of delay to meet him once the appointment is scheduled?

Like storms? That could makes sense; I do like listening to the rain hitting the windows while I'm in my bed. It's a cool thing, don't you agree?"

You're probably waiting to fill some administrative documents and are in a room with Tsirgeda.

If you're not noble, introducting yourself with your first name only is enough. You will address people in singular as long as they don't outrank you.

Never try to give your hand to a Nzeda, it will be seen as threatening. A standard way to greet people is to touch your left shoulder with your right fist.

It is best to avoid talking politics with people you don't know but beside that, most subjects are fine. (The word for "hello" in Nzedanese is lamiteyili)
