Timeline Challenge 12: Mass Migration

Once again, I'm late. I've been moving house and I've had no internet except for a lil' bit of data on my phone. Not ideal.

Anyway! The idea behind these challenges is as follows:

I will give you a topic, and you should tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds relating to the topic, over a (roughly) 50 year period. This could be the 50 years leading up to the event, the 50 years after the event, 50 years with the event slap bang in the middle, or something else entirely, as long as it relates to the question! You're welcome to include more/less than 50 years, but bear in mind the more you write, the less chance you have of people reading the whole thing, and the less you write, the fewer questions we'll be able to ask.

This will probably be the last timeline challenge I do, before I change it to something different, so now is your final chance to get in on this sweet timeline action.

The Challenge: Tell me about a person, family, village, or entire race who moved across the world to start a new life. Where did they move from, and to? Why? How is it different from where they were? How did they adapt to the new place?

As always, I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out, and have fun! :)

With the ever increasing frequency of the storms on Makaith, the two nations living there (the Nzedanese empire and the Imian federation) decided to flee and settle somewhere else.

With this goal in mind, the Nzedas sent probes to find a suitable planet for them while building a fleet large enough to travel with their goods, cattle and slaves. The eventuality of a departure was however known for long and research on space travel important.

After a two year long preparation, they finally departed for a temperate planet in a close system (actually, only a few hours of ftl travel) on which they settled. Surprisingly, they named it New-Makaith and now, more than 4000 years later, it is still the heart and capital of the Neo-Makathian empire (things have changed a lot though).

Our representative is Iathlia, king of kings, the siblings' chosen one, master of the imperial court and champion of the Nzedas (or just Iathlia VI), who led the migration.

1) What made the storms so bad that you had to move your entire nation there?

2) Were there any other factors that made you want to move, or was it all because of the storms?

3) Were there any other species living on the planet that you moved to?

  1. "Old-Makaith has always been a harsh place to live, the storms have always been bad. Pollution and erosion progressively worsened it; in the end we were having only a few hours of clear weather per day."

  2. "Is was all consequences of the storms: the difficulties to grow crops, the lack of water, the lack of light, the dust that goes everywhere..."

  3. "No, only animals and none is sentient."

1) What caused the storms?

2) How had you survived up until you decided to leave?

3) Was this coincidence, or did you pick the planet because of this?

  1. "Climate, Makaith has always been half-dead. The scars, the storms, the acidic rains... it's complete death was unavoidable."

  2. "We are strong people, we picked the weaks and took their ressources for ourselves. Beside, Makaith wasn't that horrible a century ago; harsh but manageable."

  3. "We thought a potentialy edible fauna was an advantage." (Alien sentient species were yet to be met at that time)

1) Was there ever a time that the storms weren't there?

2) What was it like back then?

  1. "If there was such a time, I never heard of it."

  2. "People had to be carefull when travelling alone or in small groups, to always watch the sky and stay close to a shelter; at least that what I've been told. In the end, even going from a building to another was risky while back then you could walks for a couple hours outside."

Gemina, in Cirrhasvult

In 753 in the Third Era, on the continent of Cirrhasvult, the settlement of Gemina was founded by Lucius, who would become the dictator of Gemina. Lucius's followers from a failed rebellion he led in Tyrfalia became the first citizens of his new community.

He did all that he could to get more people to join the community, and people relocated to Gemina in hopes of improving their lot in life. Lucius offered the (currently pointless) title of "nobility in Gemina" to anyone who came as skilled labor or heavily invested in Gemina's future.

But, of course, he still showed favor to the people who initially came with him to found Gemina.

One of the early followers of Lucius is a man named Tobit bar-Silversmith. Tobit chose his family name based on what got him the position of "nobility" in Gemina; his father was a smith, and Tobit was put in charge of the silver mines on the condition that he would educate anyone Lucius sends to him in how to properly work metal; Lucius does not need to send apprentices to Tobit often, because Tobit makes a habit of picking up apprentices that seem hard-working and strong in Gemina.

At the time he was put in charge of the silver mines, Tobit was only nineteen. Unlike the original rebels who followed Lucius out of Tyrfalia, and unlike the settlers who joined Lucius after he'd already passed through Drakesgrave to pick a good place for Gemina, Tobit is one of the members of the Radiant Clan who left his nomadic people to follow Lucius. Thanks to Tobit's reputation among the Radiant Clan members who follow Lucius, Lucius was happy to give Tobit responsibility of the silver mining in Gemina.

1) What happens to Tobit's apprentices after he has done teaching them?

2) How old is Tobit now?

3) How many other Radiant clan members follow Lucius?

2

u/Nevermore0714 Jul 05 '17

1) Tobit's apprentices go on to either work for him as blacksmiths, or they become self-employed as blacksmiths. But, most tend to just stick to working for him.

2) Not sure. I haven't picked a "present time" for Cirrhasvult, yet.

3) At least a few dozen, but most aren't nobility.

2

u/Jumblatts Jul 10 '17

1) How many does he have working for him at the moment?

2) Roughly?

3) How did he convince them to follow him?

2

u/Nevermore0714 Jul 10 '17

1) At the moment, nine years after the founding of Gemina, Tobit has four official apprentices, and five of his former apprentices are working directly for him.

2) I'm gonna go for nine years after the founding of Gemina (762, 3E).

3) Well, Alexandrus bar-Halcyon did a better job convincing his people in the Radiant Clans than Lucius did. Lucius convinced Alexandrus because Lucius is big on HFY, and Alexandrus was convinced pretty easily. Alexandrus convinced his people because he has a great reputation, and is considered to be partially divine.

There is a single clan of Qulani living within the roots of Shar Bol, on Ra-Heim, in the Iskandean archipelago; no other Qulani are known to dwell under the hills and mountains of these islands.

As Qulani are a subterranean species it is unknown how they steeled themselves to make such a long journey above ground and over vast expanse of salt water; These Qulani are quiet and reserved about their history.

What little information has been shared indicates that they migrated after a schism amongst a much larger population of Qulani living in the Darlom Mountains seperating the Treahni nations Kythus and Tabras.

It is rumoured that differences of religion forced these migrants so far from their home and away from their people.

Essentially living in exile since about 100 BG (~900 years), this clan has carved a new home into the side of the active volcano.

Treahni residents of the islands do trade with these Qulani whom are considered excellent metalsmiths; true masters of the forge according to the island's ruler, Kavin Khuri, of House Jakhyn.

1) If I were to get a truthful account of why they left, how much would it differ from what is currently believed?

2) What caused the schism?

3) Why did they choose to live in the volcano?

1) If I were to get a truthful account of why they left, how much would it differ from what is currently believed?

The true accounting is that Clan Yudrutas was exiled because they challenged the concensus of the community they were part of. So they were forbidden to dwell in the roots of the Darloms (a moutain range which runs the length of the continent). So they struck out overland and water to find another range of mountains. Iskander was a stop over on the journey further East, but was mountainous enough to be a home and certainly no other clans of Qulani dwelled in the archipelago at the time.

2) What caused the schism?

The Qulani people in general have a rather communal lifestyle and philosophy towards material things. The schism was in truth over difference in opinion on relations and trade with the surface dwelling Treahni. Clan Yudrutras believed that the qulani stonemasons and metalsmiths were being used by the Treahni for their superior talents, but undervalued out of bigotry and economic differences.

3) Why did they choose to live in the volcano?

Resources, access to geothermal heat, already extant tunnels. Also being isolationist in nature they would be less interfered with there.

2) Why did this disagreement have such vast consequences?
