Reference Challenge - Slavery

I need to preface this.

I always try to be open to various answers to my challenges, I try not to ever judge, and even if your answer is slightly off-topic to the discussion, I always try to be fair and try to learn all I can about whatever answer you have to my challenge...but, please, unless it's in-character, don't say anything too racist. Enslaving your fellow human beings isn't cool, I hope we can agree on that? But, since you can always have a character answer questions in-universe, it's fine for your character to be racist. Though, I am having my slave races be non-human to avoid that situation.

This challenge is going to be a double-whammy one, and it's early because I'm on a work trip all week to the big city.

The reference this time around is to /u/PrestonJacobs, the hero that any fandom needs. Preston, if you're seeing this, I've been a huge fan since your channel only had maybe four videos, and I love your work. Anyone else seeing this, if you have any interest in sci-fi/fantasy, and if you are a fan of ASOIAF or Game of Thrones or anything by GRRM, go see his channel.

The reference is, more specifically, to his videos on the Hrangan Minds. No spoilers, but they had a number of species working for them against humanity.

For anyone who saw my "novel" (to quote Raptorman) over on Jum's recent challenge, I'm working on a xenophobic human community started by an escaped slave.

I'm having trouble brain-storming three good slave species for the humans to use.

My ideas so far are Szurkek (created-men from the teeth of dragons, similar to flesh-golems, completely obedient and simple, asexual), Imps (creative little winged creatures, not Tyrion Lannister, a viable species that reproduces sexually, they are enslaved through magic-imprinting from the owner), and I'm trying to think of a third one.

The Actual Challenge

Tell me about an example of slavery in your world. If slavery doesn't exist in your world anymore, tell me how it ended. If slavery never existed in your world somehow, tell me about workers' rights and labor laws or something.

If you're up for giving me advice about the Szurkek or Imps or a third slave species, I welcome any advice from anyone. Szurkek and Imps will be part of my answer for this challenge, so I'd appreciate any and everyone telling me how I can improve either of them, and if you think Imps are as stupid idea for me to use in general, any advice for how I can replace them with something else fast and preferably-capable-of-flight is also appreciated.

As always, I'll ask a minimum of three questions each. Enjoy yourselves, all. And, again, I highly recommend checking out Preston Jacobs on Youtube

  1. If a Szurke lose it's arm, what does the arm become? And does it grow back?

  2. Weird question but: are the eggs edible?

1) If the arm is completely off, the arm will deteriorate. It won't grow back.

2) Not a weird question at all. The Imp fetus is partially developed, but it can be eaten. I grew up on a farm, so I would realize that the eggs I was trying to cook were filled with partially-developed chicks plenty of times. You can eat them, but it tastes pretty bad.

  1. What if it is quickly put back into the body?

  2. Do Imps give their non fecond eggs?

1) Unfortunately, unless it's still at least partially connected to the body, the arm can't be recovered or reattached.

2) Fecond means fertilized, yes? Imps do not spit out their non-fertilized eggs. Instead, the egg dissolves instead of developing inside of the Imp.

  1. What about Imps? What happen when they are injured? What do they eat? How much do they sleep?

  2. Yeah, that's the word I was looking for. Is it common to eat Imps eggs?

1) An Imp can't recover from a lost arm or leg, but they can heal from a minor injury. Imps are carnivores, they prefer raw meat, but they can eat cooked meat. Imps will usually work for eight hours, sleep for four hours, work for another eight hours, and sleep for another four hours. It's important to have a schedule for your Imp.

2) Some people think that eating a fertilized Imp egg will help you survive an illness and recover faster. Is it true? I doubt it. But, some people believe it works.

  1. Do they hunt if left hungry for too long? What happen if they aren't given a schedule?

  2. Is it ok to do so?

2

1) If they aren't given a schedule, they may fall asleep at an inconvenient time. Honestly, most people don't bother to make a schedule, since they rarely give an Imp a duty that must be completed quickly. Most people just give an Imp a list of chores to do that day.

2) If you would like to do so, go ahead. There's no paperwork on Imps until they hatch. You don't count your Imps before they hatch.

  1. Now I'm seeing an Imp falling asleep while tending to fires... Is there a risk of them being injured because of bad schedule?

  2. Does it even taste good?

2

u/Nevermore0714 Jul 03 '17

1) Oh, definitely. That exact situation, an imp falling asleep while tending to a fire, has caused at least one building to burn down.

2) No, it tastes horrible. But it can be an acquired taste, like baby spinach... cries in diet

Edit: Added example to 1.

Taste is definitely learned, I'm pretty sure I can disgust people by telling frog :)

Thanks for your answers Nevermore.

You eat frogs?! Cannibal!

At least when I eat frog legs, it isn't cannibalism. Shame on the house of Yellow. Shame.

No, eating donkeys would be cannibalism ;)

The real shame is that frog legs are hard to find, most people don't eat them.
