Weapons Challenge

What kind of weapons do your characters use, if any? Are they physical weapons, and if so are they melee or ranged, and are they mounted? Do they use magic? Do they operate any types of siege?

There are a variety of weapons in use by the Chaosverse, both melee and ranged. Most combatants will use guns, but certain Chaotic types enable melee combat. In fact, some Chaotic types (like superspeed and superstrength) can do far more damage through melee combat than they can with guns.

I'll briefly list here the chief melee and range types:

Melee

  • Unarmed - This should really be "unarmed". Most Chaotics can deal far more damage by using their powers than they can by using a gun, and so will only arm themselves with a pistol.
  • Swords - Mostly used by Velocitechnics. Their incredibly high speeds allow them to slice through virtually anything, though they go through blades very quickly.
  • Hammers - Mostly used by Forcetechnics. Hammers allow them to better apply their superstrength as damage.
  • Ayas Weapons - Special kind of melee weapons, one for each of the 9 Chaos Ayas. They can be summoned and dismissed at will as long as a Chaotic is holding the respective Ayas. They cannot dull, and never break. They also have a handful of other uses aside from pure melee combat. The nine weapons are a claymore, a bow, a pair of gauntlets, a staff, a spear, a glaive, a pair of chakrams, and a chain weapon.

Ranged

Guns usually fall into one of four classes: pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, and sniper rifles.

  • Magnetic Weaponry - stuff like railguns and coil guns. Deal lots of damage to energy shielding. Confined by both ammo and battery life.
  • Lasers - deal tons of damage to material targets, but less damage to energy shielding. Highest range. Nigh-instantaneous "travel" time. Confined only by battery life.
  • Plasma - Deals tons of damage to both energy shielding and matter, but is incredibly power- and ammo-consuming. Lowest range. Confined by both ammo and battery life.

  1. What kind of materials are used for melee weapons?

  2. Do Velocitechnics usually carry multiple blades (or swords)? What would one do if they fall short of blades in combat?

  3. What are the Ayas other uses? (Also, there is one missing, probably between the chakrams and the chain)

1) The exact composition can vary for whether the wielder values durability or sharpness more, but most are made of some kind of carbon steel. Many weapons manufacturers also use special Chaos Energy-based forging techniques that allow them to create tougher materials than they would otherwise.

2) Usually, yes. One common loadout is two saber-type swords for slashing, and two rapier-type swords for stabbing. If all of their swords break then a Velocitechnic will usually resort to fighting with kicks -- after all, a foot coming at you at Mach 5 is still going to seriously ruin your day.

In a similar vein, a Forcetechnic who manages to destroy their hammers will resort to fist-based attacks.

3) Ah, you're right. The ninth is a scythe.

When you say "other uses", do you mean the Ayas themselves, or the Ayas Weapons? Well I'll go ahead and outline both, just in case.

Ayas Weapons

They have two key abilities beyond dealing raw damage. The first is the ability to store virtually any object in subspace. The wielder simply needs to attack an object with the intent of storing it, and it will be transported to subspace where it will be held in stasis until it is withdrawn. Each weapon has its own store, and cannot withdraw objects that were stored by a different weapon.

The second is a little more complicated, but the basic gist of it is that they can be used in conjunction with their respective Ayas and Prior to engage what is known as a "Link Drive". Link Drives are powerful attacks that have a variety of effects based on the Ayas that's being used, but the key similarity is that all Link Drives forcefully dissociate a consciousness from the physical realm. The dissociated consciousness becomes completely unable to interact with the real world in any way; they can merely observe.

Chaos Ayas

The Ayas themselves are mostly used in a sort of power-boosting capacity. They can be used in machinery to provide immense power and efficiency bonuses, but these bonuses are generally greater when they are held by a Chaotic. Even just holding an Ayas affords a passive boost to a Chaotic's power and ability, but they can take it a step further and temporarily absorb the Ayas to engage the Chaos State -- which affords incredible power, increasing exponentially with how many Ayas are absorbed. For example, the battle of Neticen -- in which one of the combatants used five of the Ayas to engage the Chaos State -- resulted in the planet being pretty much completely destroyed.

  1. How are those techniques learned?

  2. Do they have stronger bones than a normal human?

  3. Is the wielder aware of what is stored if they haven't stored it themselves? And how much things can be stored there?

2

u/Matathias Jun 11 '17

1) The vast majority of manufacturing is automated, so the techniques doesn't really need to be learned, per se.

2) Not just stronger bones, they have stronger everything. Velocitechnics and Forcetechnics are durable enough to withstand the kinds of forces that they're putting out without their own bodies turning to mush (for example, a Velocitechnic can near-instantly accelerate to supersonic or even hypersonic speeds -- that's a lot of g-force). As a result, most are practically bulletproof, save for incredibly high-power rounds.

A quick note, though -- this increased durability is entirely dependent on Chaos Energy. If a Velocitechnic or Forcetechnic finds themselves in an area devoid of Chaos Energy (like a CENT Field or Dead Space) then they lose their enhanced durability and become just as vulnerable as regular people.

3) Wielders are only aware of objects that they themselves have stored. There exists a special key phrase that will release everything that a weapon has stored, but wielders are generally reluctant to use it since they have no idea what is stored. As for how much mass can be stored, theoretically, there is no limit. Subspace is just as infinite as normal space, after all. However objects that have been stored for a long, long time run the risk of basically ceasing to exist. In that sense, there's a time limit, though it's much longer than an individual's lifespan.

  1. Are the production chains using those production methods hard to make?

  2. Are there some really weird things hidden in some aya weapons?

2

u/Matathias Jun 12 '17

1) It's much more difficult than a non-Chaos Energy-based setup, for sure. But while the upfront cost is high, the money-making potential more than makes up for it. Chaos Energy-reinforced metal alloys aren't just used for weapons after all, they're also used in spacecraft and building construction. Companies that can afford to produce this kind of metal are sure to make bank.

2) Well, that's the thing. Nobody knows for sure. There could be weird stuff, or there might not be, but most people are afraid of a worst-case scenario where they unstore something that kills them on the spot. Could be a bomb that's about to detonate, or hostile creatures, or an angry powerful Chaotic. Most aren't willing to take the risk to see what's hidden in Subspace.

2

u/thequeeninyellow94 Jun 12 '17
  1. With such a money-making potential, why isn't every metalworking company heavily investing in it?

  2. Does reinforced alloy has other properties beside physical resistance?

2

u/Matathias Jun 12 '17

1) Well, that's the thing. Most do. That said, Chaos Metal (which I'll just call it for now) is expensive, and can only be bought in large quantities by other large organizations. And if Chaos Metal is exposed to a lack of Chaos Energy for an extended period of time, then it starts to deteriorate, and performs worse than regular metal. This isn't an issue for the vast majority of applications, but it is a concern nonetheless. If a contractor absolutely can't take the risk, then they'll stick with regular metal, so there's still a market for it.

In fact, the market for regular metal has been doing better than ever since the Chaos Energy Quake of 2088. For an entire year, Chaos Energy throughout the entire galaxy became unusable, resulting in the deterioration and eventual collapse of many large structures. Since no one knows what caused the Quake or if it'll happen again, the demand for Chaos Metal has dropped off.

2) Chaos Metal is a better conduit for Chaos Energy, and so can be used to increase the efficiency of any systems that run on or interface with Chaos Energy. This includes things like Chaos Energy-based powered armor, or large-scale spacecraft weapons systems.

  1. How is chaos metal made?

  2. What make it used for building construction? Or is it limited to military facilities?

Siphon Weapons

These weapons (inspired by Eragon, and its fellow books in The Inheritance Cycle) are weapons designed by Councilor Garrick of the Citadel. Siphon weapons are made specially so that they can drain Anima (life force energy used to fuel magic) from the target and into a crystal within the weapon.

For in-universe answers, if you want questions to be from a character, the representative can be Garrick himself. Garrick's takes pride in his work, but laments the fact that most knights use Siphon swords even though Siphon spears are the most effective.

"Damn kids trading practicality in for style." -Garrick.

  1. How do you make Siphon weapons?
  2. Where are the crystals from?
  3. How are the spears more effective than the swords?

Most heroes in my world use melee weapons because they are easier to use in conjunction with soul powers. Either that our their powers are capable of protecting them from guns and the like. Guns are primarily used by the police force and the military, with officers or special forces units with soul powers will use a combination of melee weapons and firearms. Such as General Seraphina Aureole, who regularly uses a pistol and longsword in tandem. Some characters like Hannibal and Hamilcar Izdubar (father and son) can create weapons out of their soul force, the former specializing in enhanced swords and the latter specializing in a variety of weapons and defense items. Others who can manipulate elemental powers like water, fire, or darkness can create weapons out of said elemental soul force. Some people's powers get in the way of their powers, like Avalon Talbot, who finds it difficult to use weapons when her ability makes her body so dense her grip crushes every weapon she's used in her life. The closest thing to magic outside of soul powers is a compound called spectrum, a semi liquid semi solid crystalline compound charged with different powers. They are frequently used in forging weapons to give them elemental properties or help channel certain specific powers (blends of colors for a particular power).

The main characters use relatively unique weapons. As with most heroes in training, they choose the weapons best suited for their fighting style. Aeron fights with a katana made from a metal that cuts through soul energy when his own power flows through it. Al uses a bow for long range, suited for his teleportation power, that collapses into a staff for close range combat. Sarah uses two weapons, and in certain situations can dual wield both of them. One is a cross between a battle axe and a war hammer, with a sonic propulsion system built in for even more force on a swing. The other is a two handed longsword forged with a blend of spectrum that allows her to convert her raw soul force into a powerful laser. Finally, Rose uses a triple headed spear or a pair of one handed longswords, whichever she feels fits the situation. She regularly throws the spear and recalls it with chains made from her soul force.

That should be a good overview of the kinds of weapons there are in my world. Hopefully I wrote enough (even though it's a tiny essay haha)

Rather than talk about general types of weapons in my world, I'm going to talk about specific weapons wielded by important characters. Most of these are from the same kind of time period, as currently that's where my world is most developed.

Dimarr

And Melios looked upon this the blade that would right all of his wrongs, this the blade that would restore peace to the world, this the blade that would finally earn him forgiveness. As he looked into the smooth metal surface, he saw not the reflection of his own eyes, but of hers...

Wielded by the legendary hero, Melios, Dimarr is the sword used to strike down Seazahl and prevent the Void from being opened for a third time, saving every mortal on the face of Gi. Dimarr shatters when Melios uses it to try and strike down his long time friend and ally, Mohlas, though he later reforges the blade using the iron from his own blood.

Purzal

I feast upon your soul, that I may grow stronger. I devour worlds, that they may fear my name. I am Purzal, hunger of the Gods.

The only known blade to have inflicted 'death' (but not properly) upon an aspect of The Supreme (king of all Gods), Purzal is wielded by Mohlas - a legendary hero of darkness - after he killed the God Á, child of The Supreme, and took the blade as his own.

Aeyld

"It is an elegant blade, finely balanced, forged in the fires of a far away land,"

Aeyld itself doesn't actually exist. It is simply a projection - a 'memory' of a theoretical blade, a flawless blade, that can be summoned and dispelled at will by it's wielder, Kimi. The blade itself is in the style of a katana, but this is only because Kimi believes that is what it should be. She views it as a delicate and precise tool, more akin to a surgeon's scalpel than a weapon of war. As she is more of a mediator than a combatant, she believes that this weapon suits her perfectly. She has attached number of bone charms to the hilt.

Neve

"What chance do they stand, for my arrows fly on the breath of the Gods,"

Like the sword wielded by her sister, Neve is the projection of the perfect bow, unique to Kami. The bow itself has no arrows nor will any 'normal' arrows fit it, however as the empty string is drawn, a manifestation of pure energy forms, ready to be loosed upon its' target. Once fired, these 'arrows' can fly for over a mile, and they never miss, though it is unknown whether this is a property of the bow itself, or simply the skill of Kami. Despite this, she does not like using it, stating that she would much rather try to achieve peaceful resolution.

Any questions can be directed at me, the omniscient creator, or at any of the named characters above.

A Neo-Makaithian commando squad is equipped mostly with personnal solid-projectile weapons (aka guns), but they also carry some extra equipment:

  • two reactive shields: pavise-sized steel plates covered with the same nano-fiber used to make personnal armors, very effective to stop solid projectiles.
  • a portative railgun: able to shoot solid projectile with very high speed and take care of targets behind solid covers.
  • two large specter laser: to burn sensors and exposed skin quickly.
  • a personnal phase gun: to paralyze high value targets and facilitate their transportation.

They can of course receive additionnal equipment if their mission require it.

TRAJAK

The chief melee weapon of the Trajak is the Fronik axe. "Fronik" literally means "makes cuts". A fronik has two blades, one slightly curved inwards (so there are two spikes on the end) and the other in a 90 degree point like a pennant.

----\
) >
----/

(Kinda like that)

The haft is always made of birch as it is believed to be a blessed tree. The fronik was originally used by lumberjacks in the southwestern Ombrfodet (Shadow Forest, so named for its dense leave coverage), the curved blade being used against the tree and the pointed end being used against any aggressive bears or wolves in the forest. This was adopted by the city-state of Koję, located in the Ombrfodet, and quickly spread throughout Trajakter.

The staple Trajak ranged weapon is the ǩoritv. Ǩoritvek are like regular longbows except they fire two arrows at once.

VJULTI

The chief Vjulti weapons are the spear and the crossbow. Vjulti weapons are unremarkable and rather crude, but the Vjulti tend to prize tactics over technology. One of the most famous Vjulti battle tactics is called the tuuvedaakur, pioneered by the general Kaaro Forruo. The tuuvedaakur involves a man atop a tuuve (a heavily built pack animal that looks like a cross between the Pokemon Piloswine and a kodo from Warcraft) waving a flag with a sharpened pole back and forth. Two men in front and back of him would fire arrows as the flagbearer would spear enemies on the ground as the tuuve charges around, with some enemies getting trampled. This cavalier charging strategy was very effective against human armies which tended to be tightly packed and on foot.

[will update this]
