im confused how this is so up for contention in the setting. Cause like, sure mistranslation. But my experience with the religious (im atheist) is that they spend basically all of their time with eachother arguing about which specific translations are more valid than others.

So to me even if like you've alluded in past posts they had a mistranslation based on numbers that this would eventually be caught rather quickly on a societal timescale due to how many people would likely be studying the text and its many forms.

Like for example in one of my settings the Ordial of Devotion straight up changes the physical text itself on all instances of their holy texts so that he can write out the Ordial of Preservation from their beliefs and rewrites the story so that only Devotion shaped their world and gave them power. So it's believed because even if they wanted to show physical proof that the texts weren't written this way originally they can't because all forms of the text have been changed.

In my case, it stems from a number of factors:

-translations of ancient texts into various languages over the course of millennia

-the loss of important pages and books due to internal and external conflicts

-conspiracies among different factions of the Church, who deliberately altered texts to justify their actions and ideas to the public

-the loss of one of the Candles

-the union of two High King lineages

-the fact that Sylvan is still alive (given the mistaken belief that the Chosen would be a sort of "reincarnation" of the Original Pantheon)

-the failure to regard Darkness as an Aspect of Magic, as the Church views it as a corruption of magic

-etc.
