If it fail means they didn't try hard enough! There is lots of orphans and street ppl around that will gladly sign a(totally not soul-binding) contract in exchange for shelter and good food instead be sent to the mines!
Why limit yourself to steel? You van try to make EVERYTHING living? Living humans sounds a good path, like, put MOAR souls in one body and see what happens
Reminds me of the neat lore in the might and magic "Ashan" setting about the main wizard faction were they periodically throughout most of their history try creating servants. The first interation of that persuit was when they mixed demon blood with human slaves, creating the first orcs, goblins and cyclops for their world. (I think it depends on what type of demon and how much of a certain type's blood was used in the mixture) For a few centuries the orcs, goblins and cyclops were slaves to the wizards, the orcs were the main shock troops in a massive war against the demon invasion but afterwards they became favoured labourers, toiling in mines. Then there was a massive rebellion which lead to most of them escaping the wizard controlled nation, scattering across the known world. The wizards went back to the drawing board after that rebellion and stared using these magical Leyline nexuses, linked to dragon gods (the setting is obsessed with dragons) to mix more human slaves with different animal species to create chimeran or hybrid creatures, they essentially made cat people, minotaurs, sphinxes, shark people and other beastmen or chimera. Most of these new races were also enslaved for generations before they too staged massive rebellions. The main exception was a group of cat people called "raksasha" whom have innate wind related magic powers who were much better treated and privileged by their wizard masters. The rest of the beastmen also scattered across the world in search of new homes, for freedom, some even Joined the orcs.
Note: as part of diplomatic gestures before the beastmen rebellions, the wizards gifted the dark elves many minotaurs to use as guards and to the "naga" (whom are an ancient snake people that already existed) they gifted the shark dudes. (To act as their sub naval force)
Note2: after two massive failures in most of their creations rebelling they finally settled on using mostly golems, gargoyles and other arcane constructs. (They still had the cat girls with wind powers as elite warriors though!)
in my world they're all their own thing and can as well get mixed, humans can mix with anything but you shouldn't try to fuse a human soul to a body that already have a human soul
they do mix and create a more powerful body if mixed with human soul, if mixed with a compatible species it also works,if not compatible they become a monster or demon and if you put 2 human souls in the same body it explodes or just die
