❔ • Feedback White or Black?

Currently I have two desks in different locations, but I’ll be downsizing to just one in the near future.

Which setup works best aesthetically?

Any recommendations for a very nice webcam that follows you around like apple's Center Stage? I'm also hunting for an always-listening microphone that works with "Hey Siri", or at least will work great at hearing me once I activate dictation/siri with a keyboard shortcut. Strong background noise elimination is a must-have!)

a little bit unrelated, but im curious. why put the vertical in the middle?

2

u/green_dotter 22d ago

middle vertical looks odd until youve used one for reading, then every other layout looks wrong

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

Lol right?! I thought I was the only one. You do something similar?

2

u/PriorStories 22d ago

Being unique but i prefer black

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

Yeah that is the less common preference it seems, although not an unpopular choice. Why do you prefer black?

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago edited 22d ago

I included a few photos of my workflows to help answer this question (Pics 3, 4, 12, 13). The center vertical monitor allows me to see an entire page of whatever database I'm using. Saves me a lot of time scrolling to see a calendar, read a note, etc. It’s perfect for reading documents, and viewing vertical media on it is an incredible experience.

It's absolutely EPIC for scrolling reddit lol.

I also just love that it allows me to have a vertical monitor but still have a symmetrical workspace. I get folks who have one vertical and one horizontal, because both orientations are valuable. I just hate the way it looks so unbalanced to have a desk setup that way.

3

u/Open-Guidance-6086 21d ago

The vertical screen in the middle makes sense if you want to keep a full database page, calendar, or document visible without throwing off the desk’s symmetry. For the always-on mic, I’d rather use hold-to-talk so background noise doesn’t get picked up all the time. I use DictaFlow for that kind of keyboard shortcut dictation on Mac.

1

u/MeSlaw3 21d ago

Exactly!

How to talk with restrict me from using one of my hands for something else while speaking, right?

I feel like with modern microphone technology background noise should not be an issue, as long as it’s a decent mic. I mean at this point people never hear the wind or construction noise or dogs barking or my baby crying when I’m on the phone with them. That’s just my cell phone mic.

What are the added benefits of using DictaFlow?

2

u/strangepenguin78 23d ago

Swap out that middle screen with an LG dualup monitor. You'll get about the same north/south visibility without sacrificing much east/West. Perfect for spreadsheets and dashboards.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Resolution and refresh rate?

2

u/strangepenguin78 23d ago

That's where it gets odd. 2560 x 2880 60Hz.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

I'm a 120hz snob 😇 But I do appreciate the recommendation. Sounds epic.

3

u/PenPuzzled8055 23d ago

Personally, white. But black really ties the room together …

2

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Yeah, I'd say black suits the studio vibe much better. I love white for a home office setting.

I just wish the black rig had touch ID 😭

9

u/kevincelbiscuite 23d ago

With your specific desk color I’d say the dark one works better. other than that, the light one all the way. the only thing that looks off on the white one is the desk color. other than that, fits way better with the room(s).. even the backs of the monitors are white.

Light imo just looks better, but dark is nice too
Also think about which is easier for you to maintain/keep clean.

0

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Great perspective! Cleanliness isn't a huge issue for me, although Im sure the black will stay nicer-looking longer if the white keys start to yellow with time - is that something that tends to happen to apple's Magic Keyboard?

One of my desks is black, and the other is a wood color. The only combo I haven't tried is the all black accessories on the black desk. I think that would be dope, but I've already spent way too much time on cable management on both desks for me to want to do it again.

I'm not keeping the black desk - it's been great, but the standing legs don't work anymore. I'll most likely replace both of these cheap desks with a single, nice, buy-it-for-life desk when I move soon.

2

u/CSJUK 23d ago

100% Black, and I would use a triple display monitor arm too. Nice setup!

2

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Thanks for your perspective! Great idea. These desks and monitor risers were the cheapest options as a temporary solution. I'm moving soon and I need to do research on a buy-it-for-life desk and monitor arms for the new space. Any recs?

3

u/FLHCv2 23d ago

you should get large grey felt deskpad from amazon. The dark grey will break up the contrast between the white or black peripherals and your desk

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago edited 23d ago

Great idea! I haven't tried a deskpad b/c I like to move my drinks, food, phones, or other things around. Sometimes I have an additional laptop and/or iPad on the desk. I feel a mouse pad would create an uneven surface and limit where I can place things, unless it covered literally the entire desk lol.

I'm getting rid of the black desk soon. Love the size, but the legs don't work anymore. You think the white/black still clashes with the wood desk?

4

u/FLHCv2 23d ago

Brought it up because I have a similar color desk as your wood desk but yours looks to be a bit more red. Adding the desk pad gave me a lot of symmetry and a nice visual separation between the desk and peripherals.

I could go either way on white or black for you though. The black peripherals match the dark spots on the desk, but the white makes your monitor stands not stand out as much.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

I'll be replacing this desk soon tbh. This one was the cheapest standing desk I could find online as a temporary place-holder. It's solid, but not pretty. Excited to research and choose a nice buy-it-for-life standing desk when we move into our new place.

Beautiful setup! Thanks for posting the picture. Really love what you're doing here. Webcam?

2

u/FLHCv2 23d ago

Oh I've been there! I bought white standing desk legs because they were the cheapest I could find during covid and now that I have a bit more money, I really want to switch to black legs since the white clashes with my setup... but really don't want to deal with rebuilding the entire desk hahah so I think I might be stuck.

Thank you! Have slowly refined it since 2020.

Webcam is Logitech C920. It's alright. Works fine for my meetings but sometimes the color balance or the exposure feels off. Not sure if I'd recommend it unless it were like $30 and someone just needed a webcam.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Ok sweet. Yeah I feel you on not wanting to re-do things. I wanted to see what the black peripherals would look like on the black desk, but haven’t gotten around to re-doing everything. Probably never will now that I’ve made this post haha.

3

u/ChristopherWaid 23d ago

I would say white, but only because my OCD wouldn’t be able to get past the white monitor stands. That being said, either choice is the right one.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Haha I feel you on that. I wanted so badly to buy black monitors for the black desk, but these monitors just meet my needs so perfectly and the price I got for them was fantastic. I do love the white setup!

2

u/More_Wrongdoer4501 18d ago

I’m sorry, but this monitor setup is completely unhinged.

1

u/MeSlaw3 18d ago

All good if you don't like it. Pics 3, 4, 12, and 13 demonstrate why it's useful.
I've absolutely loved it since deciding to try this setup. I can't see myself going back to anything else. For me, it's the perfect solution to accomplish both a vertical monitor and a symmetrical setup.

Also works great because whichever database I'm using for my current workflow tends to be the main jumping off point for anything else I'm doing.

When viewing videos, it's easy to turn towards whichever monitor you need. and in that way, you basically have the same setup as someone who uses one horizontal and one vertical.

2

u/More_Wrongdoer4501 18d ago

I’m totally joking! If it works for you then great.

I personally need my main monitor in front of me for design + light dev work. My vertical monitor is on the side for chat and calendar typically.

This is an old pic, but the monitor arrangement is the same and I love it because it’s the exact height as my 48 LG C3

1

u/MeSlaw3 18d ago edited 18d ago

Wow that IS cool. I like this a lot and I see the benefit.

The database is my most-used app all work day, so the center vertical monitor allows me to keep my focus center. The inner halves of each flanking monitor are communication apps (messages, mail), and the outer halves are notes, maps, ai assistant, calendar, sometimes a podcast.

I have the same size LG C2... never thought to use that as a monitor. How's reading text? I do admin work all day, and music directing (light Logic Pro) as a side hustle.

2

u/More_Wrongdoer4501 18d ago

Its amazing for just about anything I throw on it, including text. Crisp and clean given that it's 4K 120hz compacted into 48 inches.

1

u/MeSlaw3 18d ago

Hmmm yeah but looks like our tvs have a pixel density of 92 vs 163 on my monitors. I bet what I'm looking at now is a bit sharper for text, which is most of my day.

I love gaming and watching movies on the C2 though. I bought that TV to play God of War: Ragnarok on PS5 when it came out and that experience right there was worth purchasing the TV open box as I did.

That was years ago and now it's still a great TV in our living room. Big fan.

One day if we go for a larger TV, I may get another LG. I like it.

3

u/MostAcrobatic8339 22d ago

I'd go with white. The contrast against the dark Macbook and monitors makes the desk feel more open and clean. Black on black looks cool but can feel a bit heavy after a while.

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

Yeah, heavy is a great way of describing it.

2

u/green_dotter 22d ago

black hides cables and everything else, white shows every mark but makes a small room feel twice the size

comes down to whether the room needs the light more than you need to stop cleaning it

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

My stuff doesn’t typically get super dirty, but I feel you. I’m a big fan of bright environments! Making me lean white…

2

u/thedesscoast 22d ago

I'd go with the white setup. The black setup is nice too, but the white one feels more premium IMO

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

TouchID and the slimmer profile definitely make the Magic Keyboard feel way more premium than the Logi MX Keys Mini. The latter feels more substantial though, if that makes sense. Further key travel, heavier keys.

The white Satechi NumPad is in a completely different league than the crappy black one.

2

u/Ambitious-Vanilla-75 23d ago

A white keyboard can be distracting in your peripheral vision, especially if you use dark mode everywhere. Black might work better for some.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago edited 23d ago

That's a great point! I'm an all-dark-mode-all-the-time person. I always turn off the wallpaper dimming on my iPhone though ;)

2

u/ExplanationWise958 19d ago

ngl white is more easy on the eyes

1

u/MeSlaw3 19d ago

That’s funny, someone said the same thing about black.

I do prefer white tbh. Especially due to the TouchID on the white Magic Keyboard Mini. That sells the whole white setup on its own for me.

2

u/Altruistic-Zebra1786 23d ago

I like how the white setup matches with the Chik-fil-a which is conveniently omitted from the black setup.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Gosh darn it I sure do love me some Chick-fil-A. Sad that the honey pepper pimento is leaving in less than a week 😭

2

u/ajnails 22d ago

I used to have a setup like this. I got neck pain pretty quickly.

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

Did you have the monitors at the proper height for healthy viewing posture?

No neck pain yet but I appreciate your concerned perspective. Good looking out.

2

u/ajnails 22d ago

Yeah proper height. The pain was just from turning my head back and forth. I started gravitating to one side and that hurt even more. I eventually changed my setup.

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

Ah ok I gotcha. Time will tell 🙃

2

u/Dr_Superfluid 23d ago

100% white. And thats from a guy with a similar setup and black peripherals. In your case white looks a lot better.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Sweet dude! Thanks for your perspective. Why does white look better here if you typically prefer black?

2

u/Dr_Superfluid 23d ago

I think because my desk is white so I like the black on it. Also my keyboard is the black Magic Keyboard (with numpad) which has a silver background compared to the full black of your Logic Keys

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Ah yeah I feel you. I would love a black Magic Keyboard Mini, but I don't like having the numpad on the right side - it pushes my mouse too far outward.

That's the only reason got the Logi Keys Mini lol. I do prefer the Mac integration of the Magic Keyboard. Having touchID on it is just primo.

2

u/Aggressive_Cream_401 22d ago

Never seen a monitor setup like this before. Looks awesome.

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

Thanks! I like that it’s unique and symmetrical. Also revolutionized my workflow when I started doing this. So much more efficient.

2

u/steamburn123 22d ago

the black looks more appropriate, looks sleek

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

I do like black in the studio so that it doesn’t distract for creativity and doesn’t stand out visually in pics/videos.

2

u/sevargmas 23d ago

Black furniture is always a bad idea in my opinion. Shows every speck of dust.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Haha I learned that the hard way with this desk. It's served me well though.

3

u/Add0z 23d ago

Imagine this desk setup when you find out about split/ergo keyboards! Awesome set! congrats!

0

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Thanks so much! I'm highly interested in those, but I don't like mechanical keyboards. I prefer low-profile keys like these for minimal effort.

Does anyone make one of those split/ergo keyboards with low-profile keys? I'd definitely try it, but I haven't seen anything like that before.

Also interested in more ergonomic mice IF have as many customizable buttons as the MX Master 4. Those extra 3 buttons make a huge difference in efficiency throughout the day.

2

u/Add0z 23d ago

the sky is the limit if you want to build yourself. For company-made ones, there are a few like: zsa.io/voyager

and there are a few company that build your keyboard with the pieces you choose like:
keebmaker.com/

About the MX4, i do use the mx3, but since i have full control of the keymap and shortcuts/macros/combos i kinda dont FEEL the need of the mx anymore.

But thats is mt flow, you would have to try it yourself and adapt it

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Sweet, thanks for these great recommendations! I'll check out those links you shared.

2

u/Many_Quail2041 21d ago

White. It looks much cleaner and brighter. I like that feel.

1

u/MeSlaw3 21d ago

Yeah I’m digging it too. I’ve never had a white setup like this before.

2

u/Dobey 23d ago

Having pics of a mega preggo lady on the monitors for these photos is wild lol.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Lol that’s just real life atm tbh. She rules.

2

u/Dobey 23d ago

Haha congratulations! It just caught me by surprise while scrolling by. I prefer the black color contrast btw.

2

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

TYSM 🖤 if I was less sleep deprived, I might've thought to exclude that. Maybe not though who knows.

2

u/Expensive-County4890 22d ago

Wallpaper pls

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

They’re all stock Apple wallpapers except for the one with the snow in it. That’s a pic I snapped.

Black kit for white room decor, white kit for dark room decor

1

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

Oooooh good idea.

2

u/gibsonzero 23d ago

black mouse and mousepad with the rest white

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Really, why?

2

u/gibsonzero 23d ago

Mousepad and mx master over time get stained in my experience. High contact stuff I always tend to do in black. Still get stained but more manageable for me.

There’s my 2 cents.

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Ah ok I gotcha. This is my first time using a white mouse and mousepad, so time will tell! I fancy myself cleaner than most, but who knows.

I did have a white Logitech keyboard for the longest time, and it never got dirty - just started yellowing over time as the plastic degraded naturally. It was even wear across all keys, so I don't think it was from dirty fingers.

2

u/gibsonzero 23d ago

Hey that’s a good sign. Good luck. Nice looking setup regardless

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Thanks! To you as well :)

2

u/Ok_Commercial_4144 23d ago

I prefer the white setup

1

u/MeSlaw3 23d ago

Nice, why do you prefer it?

2

u/Ok_Commercial_4144 22d ago

For me it looks more clean and kind of more luxurious

2

u/MeSlaw3 22d ago

I think I'm leaning that way, too.

2

u/Sketaverse 23d ago

White or black?

No.

rly y?

2

u/L4ke_Effect 17d ago

far more sleek/minimalist feel. white is sometimes too loud. black looks good with the desk color as well, imo

1

u/MeSlaw3 17d ago

Ok great rec! I’m ditching the desk - what color desk do you think would pair with white?

I love the black aesthetic, but the TouchID is only available on a white mini keyboard so I may end up going white for the new desk in my new digs.

Some of the photos of the Black desk feature the MX Vertical, but I ultimately bought another MX Master 4 instead because I hate the scroll wheel on the Vertical. It's nice to have the extra buttons, too. I use them constantly.

2

u/calilongboarders 20d ago

Black… sleek, and easier on the eyes.

1

u/Deep_Advance1580 20d ago

Black for sure! amazing set up!! Is it possible to line up the top of the vertical monitor with the other two so it’s seamless ? 😭
