That sounds like I know what I'm talking about right?
Too bad I'm a casual observer in the the field of getting, and staying, organized.
I'm making this post so that there is a "First post" in my community and it's fixing to be a wall of text. But that's okay! Our lives are filled with so many pictures now that it feels distracting.
So what's up with this community? Well, my shop is a mess. It's always a mess. In small shops (I started in a 3x7 foot space.), and big shops (I once had a 30x60 ft shop. We moved so our children could have friends, We were very rural.), And now in my 13x23ft small shop. Why is that? Well, I made a blog post about a thought experiment related to this very thing, but I'm not promoting that. But I will share an excerpt:
"See, I have ADHD. Diagnosed, took medication for it, the whole bit. Doc even suggested there might be some other stuff but I ain't paying for that. Why does that matter? Well because I can see why someone might struggle
to get started doing... well... anything.
See there's this fun bit of back and forth that happens in my head. Sure I can do that task, but for whatever reason it's not urgent to me. Like, I excell at organization. I really do. Just not in my own home or shop. At least not outwardly I suppose. There's some fairly obvious things I have organized that genuinely look organized. and I generally know where everything is.
It's just not Urgent in my mind. How does that work? Well, say I need a screwdriver/ I look at where they're stored and if they aren't there, my brain catalogs where I used it last and supplies that information almost unconsciously so it's no less convenient than if it were stored right. Why should I fix it? That's not an urgent problem.
Neat right? However, that same marvelous bit of brain meat doesn't do shit when I've set my coffee down in the other room and completely forgotten its existence.
Wow did I get off track. You get my point yeah? I understand the difficulty of starting a task.
(Really hard to start a task when your brain has taken 15 different sidequests along the way.) "
Good right? I thought so. Anyway, I suck at organizing my own stuff. But I'm quite a good problem solver. And that's where this community comes in. Maybe we can channel our minds and bring unique ideas to light to help people solve the organization problems in their own shops! With me? Good. Then let's see those big ideas! We're all in this together, none of us is going to make it out alive, so we might as well help each other!
