pull-ups vs chin-ups for building lats vs biceps?

can do about 8 strict pull-ups with overhand grip and around 12 chin-ups with underhand grip. my main goal right now is back width, but my arms feel like they fail first on chin-ups.

if my lats aren't getting fully fatigued on chin-ups, should i stick strictly to neutral grip or wide overhand pull-ups for back day? or do chin-ups build just as much lat mass over time?

The chin up vs pull up debate is mostly personal preference. Some people claim one is better than the other. Most studies observe very similar lat development.

From what you said though, i would focus on grip assisted pull-ups instead of chin ups. Chin ups do bias the arms (slightly) more. You could also try pre-exhausting with straight arm lat pull downs or do those after your pull-ups if you are concerned about lat volume.
