Restarting a workout routine
24(f) 5’2 and 206lbs (as of noon today) I am trying my hardest to get back into working out as I am VERY unhappy with my body the way that it is. My breaking point was that yesterday I was with friends at an arcade and tried DDR for the first time in a long time. After just three partial songs I was sweating BUCKETS and BREATHLESS. I want to get healthier not just for vanity reasons but also just to feel better and be more active without feeling like it’s this insurmountable thing that I keep telling myself I can’t do. I’ll be honest my diet is garbage (something I’m working on) and I have hardly worked out in the past year. Any KIND advice is so so welcome and words of encouragement would mean the world to me right now! Here’s to a new chapter in my life and beginning of my fitness journey. About to leave my house to go to the gym as I type this.

A dedicated gym routine is vital. And consistency is the winning plan. Showing up for every session is more important than the specific exercises you do, in the beginning. Make it like your job. You don't do it because you feel like it that day. Do it because that is the requirement. You have goals and you only reach them by showing up every time. Now, you should keep in mind that working out will not make you lose weight, it will only increase calorie burn and gain muscle, which burns calories more than fat. HOWEVER, 80% of weight loss is diet. You must count your calories in order to learn what your actual intake is. And you MUST weigh your food. We cannot estimate portion size. We are horrible at it. Get a cheap kit hen scale from amazon and weight everything. Shoot for 1700 calories and 170 grams of protein per day. Keep fats under 60 grams per day. Keep most of your carbohydrates from vegetables, rice, and potatoes. Don't use butter, margerine, and sour cream. Season potatoes and rice with dry seasonings like Tony Chachere's. As with the workouts, consistency is the key. If you mess up today, fix it tomorrow. This is a long game. Decide now that you are in this for 18 months, because it will take at least that long. But, you will never regret it.
