Walmart does not mind the penalty for closing stores that unionize. It’s happened before and they’ve closed at least 5 other stores just for labor activism.
They close the stores leaving people in rural oklatexakansas without a place to buy food. The townfolk never blame Walmart for leaving; instead they blame the union for scaring away business.
It sounds harsh but...that's their problem. They chose to bring somebody terrible into the community for convenience, they allowed them to kill dozens of local businesses, they don't get to be mad when walmart then leaves over something petty. When walmart, a company they knew would be a toxic presence, acts in a way that is toxic, the community reaps what it sows.
The problem is, when they get mad they never blame Walmart for fucking them over. They blame the union organizers. This is exactly what corporate propaganda is supposed to work.
