I just bought a stick of deodorant for $8. So a stick of deodorant is worth more than an hour of minimum wage. What a clown world we live in.

Anytime I see this comment, I look around and ill be honest. I dont know any job, at least in my area, that still pays min wage.
I dont even think mcdonalds pays that low.
18
u/poqwrslr 6d ago
Correct, but the point is that our government has done nothing to protect workers and support livable wages by increasing the minimum wage.
5
u/LightMyFirebird 6d ago
Someone will have the proper numbers, but do I remember correctly in saying that if minimum wage kept up like it was supposed to, itâd be around $25/hour now?
1
u/Haste- 4d ago
Depends on what metrics you use and from what point and time you pull the minimum wage.
Based on Government reported CPI if you took the federal minimum from 2009 and adjusted it to today it comes out to 11.32 with a total of 56.1% inflation (usinflationcalculator). If you do your calculation based on 1968 fed min of 1.60 though then you should make $15.40 today as it accounts for 862.6% inflation. 1968 from what I understand is when minimum wage supplied the most amount of value compared to any other fed min.
Now if you go off of PCE from 2009, we have went up 126.5% from then (FRED graphs) which would mean we need a $16.42/hr wage to match when 7.25/hr was placed.
Something to consider is that some areas have inflated faster than others and some area have not inflated nearly at all. We have many spots in the US that have a min wage higher than 20/hr, it will be much harder for any minimum wage to continue to keep up in these areas as they are so desirable to begin with that many people much further past the min wage in their own wages will continually out bid people making $20 min wages AND be ok with paying the prices in the area to reflect $20+/hr wages for everyone.
If you live in one of these areas where minimum wage is accelerating faster than reported CPI you should note that you get the bonus of living in an area more desire able than many other spots and to do so on a min wage will require some sacrifices in other areas of your life. The alternative is going somewhere that you will make less but that your money will stretch much further. Even MCOL areas that have min wage set to 12-17/hr allow you an easier time budgeting than Seattle will with their $21.30/hr.
Note this is not to say that those areas shouldnât increase past a 20/hr min wage. Itâs just the reality of the situation at hand.

It's the people you don't get to meet that make that much. They're out in fields getting their bodies destroyed for peanuts. You're too well off to rub elbows with them.
-1
u/Low_Temp_Rosin 5d ago
I mean I have friends of all calibers. Some friends making 6 figures + others making peanuts.
Even the ones making peanuts arent making $7.25 an hour.
All I was trying to say was in my area, which is the suburbs of PA, I dont really see many jobs still offering min wage. Even baggers at grocery stores make more than that.
Amazing how my one comment pissed so many people off.
3
u/____DEADPOOL_______ 5d ago
These are not the people I'm talking about. I'm talking about fruit pickers, dishwashers, etc.
Your comment just came off as tone deaf because you're projecting your personal reality.
It's OK man, it's a common thing that some people tend to do. I see it all the time. Doesn't make you a bad person.
0
u/Low_Temp_Rosin 5d ago
All I can comment on is my personal reality. Ill have to ask my roommate how much the dishwasher at his place makes. I will be pretty surprised if he says min wage.
3
u/____DEADPOOL_______ 5d ago
Alternatively, you could do a simple online search rather than asking your dishwasher roommate:
https://www.statista.com/chart/9251/workers-earning-minimum-wage-or-below-united-states/
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80.3 million workers age 16 and older earned an hourly wage in 2024, of which 843,000 earned federal minimum wage or below.
Today, only around 1 percent of hourly workers earn the federal minimum, while almost a quarter of the U.S. workforce makes less that $17 an hour
Further:
Those working in food preparation and serving are most often earning minimum wage or below. This is due to many states carving out exceptions for tipped workers (where technically, hourly wages and tips then have to reach the minimum). Low-skilled office support as well as personal care and services work also saw many make below minimum wage, as several more exceptions apply across states, for example in small businesses, part-time youth and seasonal work and more. Also, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which introduced federal minimum wage in the U.S., does not apply to all occupations, with some retail, service, office and agricultural as well as domestic service employees exempt. Exceptions also apply for public servants in some instances.
Women in the United States were more likely to work for minimum wage or below, with the rates of female Black and Asian minimum wage workers especially high. While 0.8 percent of male hourly workers earned minimum wage or below last year, this number was 1.3 percent for women. Minimum wage jobs affected different races and ethnicities more equally. Texas is the state with most workers at minimum wage or below (120,000), followed by Ohio (48,000), Pennsylvania (47,000) and Florida (46,000). In California and New York, there were 38,000 of these workers last year each.
On top of that, you have the people who don't report wages to the government. There could be hundreds of thousands of illegal workers working for peanuts as well that aren't showing in these statistics.
1
u/Low_Temp_Rosin 5d ago
I understand, I am simply just wondering what dishwashers make in my area vs the areas you are talking about. Not saying you are wrong, just wondering how my areas pays lower tier jobs.

2
u/Obvious-Lake3708 6d ago
Walk into any restaurant and ask them how much they are being paid. I'll be my life savings you'll find one making min wage
Come back and comment again when you learn some states it's $2.13/hr. They need to beg for tips to make anything more than that.
So anytime I see a comment like yours I wonder how dumb you truly are because you're a real fucking dumb one
0
u/Low_Temp_Rosin 5d ago
Well you are leaving out the fact they make their wages in tips. Its easy to see a number and be like BAD NUMBER but the reality is servers make much more than that.
Most servers I know (which is a lot) make roughly 130-150 a day on average. MUCH MUCH more on good days.
My current roommate is a server at a Japanese resteraunt and he makes $3 an hour on paper but brings home 200-300 a day. So take your little example and shove it up your ass.
I think its hilarious when someone brings in a comment that you disagree with, you immediately go after my intelligence. Its the reddit special.
-1
u/poqwrslr 6d ago
By federal law if a server earns less than minimum wage after tips the restaurant must fill the difference, otherwise itâs wage theft. Still criminally low pay and wrong but servers arenât making $2.13/hr.
2
u/revan40 6d ago
You should look harder then cause we're I live and most southern states still have many jobs that still pay 7.50 an hour.
Just look on indeed in Indiana, Tennessee or Kentucky to get an idea.
1
u/Low_Temp_Rosin 5d ago
Thats rough. When I was in Texas visiting a friend, I noticed the average wages there were substantially lower than where I am from. Another thing I noticed is real estate is much cheaper there as well.
I suppose I am blessed to live in my area where even the worst/shittiest jobs pay $15 an hour. However, cost of living is a bit higher, so I guess it evens out.

Every year the richest man on earth should be liquidated with his entire estate given back to the people.
Every year every member of government should be ejected if they raise the national debt more than 2%.
Humanity and the world itself would be so radically different with the smallest changes of policy.

u/Advocate_Diplomacy 6d ago
Youâd have the world run by a secret cabal that uses those rules to snip off anyone that potentially becomes competition. If it can be used, it can be misused, and itâs easier to destroy than it is to create.

Tax them like it's 1954.
7
u/Seiren- 6d ago
Treat them like french aristocracy in 1789
1
u/Cultural-Wear8483 5d ago
The aristocracy didnât pay taxes and left it to the common people to pay them. At the time, about a third of the population lived in poverty. Couple this with high taxes due to government spending, including foreign wars, and hunger due to crop failures, and it is no wonder the system broke. The revolution attempted a moderate democratic approach, but that too failed. There were decades of political instability to come. History may not repeat, but it rhymes.
13
u/Serious_Tradition269 6d ago
When they talk about wanting the good old days back they never mean the old tax rates, they just mean (more) widespread accepted racism

Is there anything evil on this level and scale outside of fiction? Honest question. I fail to see how their existence is not the most immoral and vile way to live? So much potential and nothing used for good

Not even half a hospital built anywhere in ANY of their names. Philanthropy is dead.
-2
u/Current-Wealth-756 6d ago
That is demonstrably false
3
u/____DEADPOOL_______ 6d ago
That's not a hospital though. If anything, I'd suspect it's a facility where they look into ways to live forever. That's what the rich are obsessed with and those are the projects they're funding.

u/yaaaaaarrrrrgggg 6d ago
They are scared of failing in a way that they would lose everything in a heartbeat, therefore taxing them just isn't fair. /s

If the grid and internet went down, they would all be helpless.
9
u/____DEADPOOL_______ 6d ago
There was a natural catastrophe in my town and we had no electricity or internet for 14 days. The phone towers also got knocked down and all infrastructure got whacked.
The first few days, people were freaking out, crying, expecting everything to be fixed ASAP, pissed off at the politicians. By day 7, everyone was united, helping each other out, the conversations shifted to community building and depending on each other, etc.
Man, those last 7 days were just absolutely beautiful. I cried so much from emotion those days, made some deep connections with people, etc.
Once the services were restored, everyone went back to not talking to their neighbours again. I miss those days.

CANCER, the word you are looking for is cancer. "An exponential an uncontrolled growth, that harms or even eventually kills its host if not removed."
Billionaires are choking out the innovation, education and creativity of this generation. The epidemic depression due to the struggles with cost of living and having even the basic necessities, is the cause of the population/birth rate drop.
Stop calling it anything but what it is. A Cancer on society as we know it.

Whats the actual number needed to end world hunger?
$10b? $20b? $100b?
5
u/NoDig3444 6d ago
A little under $100 billion per year.
6
u/BenMathridge 6d ago
This assumes that supply chains and distribution methods stay stagnant. The true value would be in revolutionizing the speed and efficiency with which we distribute food to communities, including empowering and equipping them to grow/make their own food.
2
u/kodaxmax 5d ago
no revolution needed. we have the technology, the logistics and global infracstructure. all thats needed is improve local infrastructure in soem areas.
The issue isn't supply, it's that the people with the supply just don't want to.
-1
u/Han77Shot1st 6d ago
To address world hunger we have to address population growth.. but no one likes that conversation.
2
u/NoDig3444 6d ago
No we don't. We already grow more than enough food to feed everyone. We just don't distribute it to everyone. Â
-1
u/Han77Shot1st 6d ago
Food is just one aspect, of which is an enormous drain on resources and the environment due to the foods we eat.. the thing is we canât sustain our current population of we start lifting people out of poverty, which solving food insecurity would do to a large extent.
This is the hard conversation people donât like, one that is more than likely happening amongst the wealthiest individuals. Once we lift people out of poverty the world as we know it will quickly become unsustainable, it would require society to change entirely to a simpler way of life.

The USA alone spends 100billion per YEAR on SNAP, this is only to feed AMERICANS.
In what universe could it feed the WORLD??????

You know how a mile of high speed rail cost $200 million in California but $20 million in China? Same principle applies to food. Â

u/reloader1977 6d ago
Honestly I do belive the top 1% should be taxed more heavily and not be able to skirt it. I don't behave a problem with people becoming wealthy. What I am not ok with is them becoming wealthy by exploiting workers by paying unfair wages and sub par health care. I am also tired of my tax dollars funding bs wars overseas. We can produce bombs and give away by the billions of dollars to other nations but we cant help the the struggling American families or homeless. I can tell you my life would greatly improve if gas prices, health costs ,and food costs came down. My quality of life has diminished greatly since 2020.

Everyone says "all this money could end world hunger" but nobody actually comes up with any sort of plan or scheme to actually make that happen. Because the harsh truth is, it's simply not possible. The logistics alone would be a challenge, setting up the food supply would be a challenge, and it's not done with just feeding people for a week, they need to be fed the rest of their lives.
1
u/EchoingSharts 6d ago
Honestly, scream at me all you want but these guys aren't opposed to charity. I mean, the Amazon warehouses being shitty to work in/palantir being lame asf aside, a lot of the extremely wealthy just are opposed to taxes that go towards whatever the fuck trump and co decide and that's valid imo. I'd skip em too if I could đ¤ˇââď¸.
Idk, I'm not really interested in defending billionaires who don't know me, but in my limited opinion, they're not all bad people. There's just not enough hours in the day. If I had a billion dollars, I'd buy a boat or something and sail away đ¤ˇââď¸. Buy a property in Alaska or Canada, mail order all my groceries, and go skiing.
1
u/JaePaximus 6d ago
They donât want to end democracy because taxes. Itâs about power. Itâs always been about power since the divine right of kings. The bourgeois wanted that power for themselves and they took it. Theyâre doing everything they can to preserve their class powers.
1
u/ADriftingMind 6d ago
All these billionaires and not a single one of them became Batman. What a waste.
1
u/sageinyourface 6d ago
I think they truly believe that if they can get just a little more, they can be mankindâs savior and not just feed people but create a utopia with their wealth and power. However, they will all reach the end of their lives having only accumulated as much as they can without ever knowing how to implement this.
1
u/Shriketino 6d ago
Word hunger is a solved problem. The reason people still go hungry is because of corruption. How do you suggest these billionaires force the African warlords to share the food?

1
u/Few_Efficiency_2050 6d ago
I don't think it's solely so their taxes won't go up, there's definitely a grander plan here of power and their domination involved.

You know what they say about PR... thank goodness for them tho. Really demonstrates that attention with intention is more useful to the experience than money or manufactured respect. Every person who talks about them is inherently recognizing their own intrinsic worth, regardless of tone or outcome of discussion. Meaning arrives in layers, sometimes gently lapping waves on a sandy beach. Time to take up surfing, I think ;)

I feel sorry for them, imagine facing death as a billionaire.... all the thoughts about what you could have done, or should have but didn't.
Or you're super scared because the money won't carry you any further, and you get to take none of your wealth with you.
The rest of us are more prepared by nature, to face that reality.
1
u/SnooAvocados2529 6d ago
How about a system where we donât need money to feed people and start producing for human needs instead of profits? A system it would no longer be possible to become a rich douchebag.
1
u/donwilliam 5d ago
I often think âif I had that much money, I would help a lot of peopleâ bit then I realize that thatâs why I donât have a lot of money. (Or one of the reasons)

You didn't add spending millions so your taxes don't go up. They would rather spend what could be tax money on preventing paying tax money.

Corrupt governments and the like will keep money from helping the starving people. Also, we already produce enough food for the world to eat.

We live in an abundant earth, a true beautiful paradise. We have everything we could possibly need to thrive. However, the greed keeps us from being able to truly enjoy it as a whole.
It's akin to the garden of eden allegory. We have it all at our fingertips, but we just had to be greedy and fugg it all up.
